You can get a new Glock 17 RTF2 for $499... Why not just get a second gun and have them both?

try a Rock Island before dismissing it out of hand Re: the OP Check out a Glock before making any decisions I have friends that love Glocks and others that can't a barn from the inside with a Glock. They are great guns IMHO but not for everyone Kinda like 1911's

Affordable
Just picked up my RIA tactical yesterday. $522 total out the door. I like it a great deal and it was within my budget.....sure I'd love a new Colt and some day I'll have one. For now I get to enjoy this none with out having to save up a few months or sell anything.

Try one out before you Knock them. Most people have nothing but good things to say about their RIA's. I would be willing to bet my life that my RIA is just as reliable as any SA or S&W 1911. |

Shouldn't you have both? I have a Glock, gonna get another, and gonna get a 1911.

I will admit, I have not shot an RIA. But I handled one in a store, along side a couple different SAs, a Kimber, a couple Sig P series guns, some Glocks, and a host of other guns. I can say without question that the Glock and the RIA were the most unimpressive guns I handled. Having shot many different guns over the years, I have a broad spectrum of experience, but I am by no means an expert on the topic. But I would say that relative to other 1911s and other $500 guns, the RIA that I handled felt cheap. I also think that Glocks feel kind of cheap too.
The RIA may run great, and to some, it may look like and feel like every other 1911 on the market. I know that it is a very popular choice here on Calguns. I wouldn't get one, and I wouldn't trade a Glock for one. I didn't mean to offend everyone. This whole conversation is off-topic since the OP is in the wrong forum to begin with. Just stating my opinion. |

I think there's a reason why quality 1911's cost $1k or more.

Don't sell the Filipinos short. IMO they are capable of craftsmanship equal to anybody. It just doesn't cost as much. Can they buy them in the P.I.? |

Man so much stuff here, even the perpetuation of the myth that a 1911 has to be made reliable.
The 1911 as it was designed by JMB, peace be upon him, was about perfect. Runs all day, all night, rain or shine. Its when you start trying to 'accurize" or "improve" upon this battle proven design that it starts to get finicky. A good 1911 should have big clearance spaces, not tight and machined for micron tolerance. Think AK 47 of the pistol world. If it isn't a little loose its wrong. RIA builds their guns to damn near Browning/Kuhnhausen specs. I even went through mine with a set of calipers to make sure. Ive even swapped parts between it and my Colt 70. There isn't a part made for a Colt 1911 that you cant put on an RIA gun, so its got the single largest aftermarket support of any pistol in existence. As for whiz bang parts, my Glock is pretty dang basic, no frills that the RIA series of pistols don't offer. So really what you boil down to are a few little personal preference issues. Both guns work well, and have a great history behind them. The 1911 has a more storied history in battle but its 100 years old, Glock has some time yet before they get to that mark, but I'm sure they will. I prefer 1911's. I own a Colt 70 series. I haven't shot my Colt since I found RIA's. Same damn gun. If anyone in the world should make a good 1911 its the Filipinos. They probably killed as many Tojo's with them as the US did in war 2. Hell the gun and the round were designed to kill Filipinos specifically! The 1911 and the Philippines are linked in a way that few countries and weapons are. |

+1 the RIA and colt 70's series are just about the same gun other than the finish. RIA got it right with their 1911 (its a good, reliable, inexpensive handgun). The people that knock it are miss informed to say the least. |
