Default Suicide at LA Gun Club...

Just came back from LA Gun Club... My friend and I went to go shooting. When signing in, I noticed a solo hispanic guy trying to rent a gun. The guy looked quiet and "broken", kinda like someone who just got fired/divorced. Anyways, LA Gun Club won't let you rent a gun when you're by yourself. Some other dude came in with him and helped the Hispanic dude rent a gun.

I'm doing my thing in stall 4 and the Hispanic dude is in stall 3. In the middle of shooting, I hear a loud THUD. At first, I thought someone dropped his gun so I figured (since LA Gun Club is ghetto) I'd stop and make sure it's safe. I put down my gun and lean out to check what's going on and I see a body on the ground and blood everywhere. My friend was right behind me, waiting for me to finish my mag, and kinda saw the action.

I kinda went into WTF/shock/panic mode. First, I went from OMFG, I did something stupid and shot him somehow, my bullet ricocheted and hit him, etc... Then, I was like oh ****, there might be an active shooter in here so I grabbed my friend and kinda ran to the door. I realized we were the only people in the range (slow day) then it hit me that he committed suicide. After that, just grabbed all my **** quick and GTFO.

5 minutes afterwards, cops came in blazing, AR-15s, 870s, handguns with X300s, all tacticool'ed out. I guess they were worried about an active shooter so I guess my worry of an active shooter was justified. LA Gun Club didn't charge us today, so I guess that was kinda nice.

Sucks for the guy and the range. RIP.

Wow. Sorry you had to go through that. So what happened to the other guy who came in with the guy who committed suicide? Was he still there when the guy shot himself?

Wow!! That happens quite often. It's my understanding that most places won't rent a gun to you unless you brought a gun with you.

Naw, I just tried to GTFO of the line into the lobby area. They asked me to stay to give a police report so I did. The staff at LA Gun Club have always been pretty cool with me otherwise I would not want to stick around.

I have no idea. The cops were asking about him. I didn't see him afterwards.

I saw a guy jump from a bridge in Fallbrook. No matter how someone offs themself it isn't pretty to see a dead body. I'll be interested to know who the other guy was. Crazy!

That's pretty crazy. I saw a homeless guy try to suicide by cop. Got shot in the gut with a revolver of some sort and lived through the pain.

Sorry you had to see that, dude. No matter the circumstance, when you see someone die like that it sticks with you for ages. I've now heard of suicide at the range several times, and all in the past year. Such a selfish act.

Default You might be surprised

that this recent suicide was their 26th over the years. Most ranges that have been around for several decades have at least a dozen such suicides.

At least he didn't take some innocent Cal Guns people with him.

Wow, to actually be there must have been really tough.

You never know what goes on in the mind of a guy hell bent on suicide. It can be the depressed guy or it can be the most happiest guy on earth.

Yet there are still level headed gun citizens out there. Don't let this stop your love of the sport.

Man your judgment was dead-on on the fella. Come to think of it bro - It could've been much worst. He could have gone postal and things would be very different. People do stupid things when desperate man.

Wow, while it's always sad when someone kills themselves, what happened to sticking your head in the oven with the gas on, or running the car in a closed garage.

Considering how many ''accidents" and suicides occur at this particular range I think its safe to assume that management could change whatever protocol has been in effect since it has obviously failed.
If they dont mind the negative attention then carry on as they have, but as someone who worked in and around ranges for more than 10 years in the Los Angeles area these guys have a bad reputation for lax standards and that itself is a deterrent to regular guys who are looking for a place to shoot.
What could they do?
-How about a rangemaster/staff on the line regardless of how many people are shooting?
-No pistol rentals for anyone who doesnt bring a personal gun or have other proof/certification of previous experience i.e handgun cert, NRA classification card, hunter safety course etc.
just my .02
