********* 3-26 range report************

I braved the rain today and took the LC9 out for it's first range session. The ammo used was Winchester Ranger 147 grain JHP and Winchester White Box 115 grain FMJ.

I started off with the Ranger since that is my duty load. Now for the bad news. The pistol failed to fire after the first round. Upon inspecting it, I noticed a piece of metal from the primer on the first round had partially obstructed the firing pin aperture on the breech face. I cleared the metal out with the tip of a knife and soldiered on. This problem persisted with almost every remaining round of the first magazine. I changed over to the FMJ load with similar results.

I was optimistic and brought 300 rounds with me. I ended up calling it after less than 25 rounds were fired since almost every round was a failure to fire. I'd read about this problem cropping up in Jeff Quinn's review on Gunblast. My pistol seems to be doing the exact same thing. Here's a picture of the problem.

I left it like that so that the Ruger people can diagnose it. In Quinn's case, Ruger was unable to duplicate the problem. Hopefully, they've gained some more knowledge and will be able to pinpoint the problem. Here are some representative primer strikes. The one on the far left is a pierced primer.

Here's a closeup of the pierced primer.

The pistol will be going back to Ruger on Monday. Based on my previous experience with my LCP, I'm confident that they'll make things right.

On a side note, the LC9 seems to be slightly too big to pocket carry, so I've ordered a Mini Scabbard holster from DeSantis Gunhide. I carry my LCP in an Uncle George's wallet holster. Uncle George won't be making a model for the LC9. The LC9 is too large to conceal in a rear pocket anyway.

There aren't many holster makers who have products for the LC9 yet. DeSantis, Alessi, Sparks, and High Noon seem to be the only options for traditional leather holsters at the moment. The DeSantis is a temporary solution while I wait the six months for the Sparks VM-2.

I'd heard the LC9 is just a bit too big for pocket carry - but it looks like its the same size as the J-frame, which is often pocket carried. Since you have one, what do you think?

Out of state now and got to hold one. Nicer than I thought it was going to be, but big. It's also quite top heavy compared to the PM9 and the grip seems just a bit small for how top heavy the slide is.

I wish these would hurry up and get on roster, I've been holding off buying an SR9 or SR9c untill I can check one of these out for myself.

Here is the tale of the tape.

Unloaded with magazine

Loaded 7+1 Winchester Ranger 147 gr

As RollingCode3 said, the trigger pull is very long. It seems heavier than I though it would be. I'm waiting on my DeSantis Nemesis to arrive to assess the pocket carry options. It seems to be a little big for that though. I'm 5-10, 175 and I can't pocket carry the J frame comfortably, so I don't thing the LC9 will be much better. I regularly carry a LCP in a back pocket wallet holster, but this is too big for that. The grip does fit my hand better than the LCP. The LCP is so small that it's hard to get a grip on it.

Not having had the opportunity to fire it yet, I must say that I really like the feel of it. I used to own a number of Kahrs, including a PM9. The PM9 was never reliable and I hated the slide stop on the Kahrs. It always dug into my thumb. The barrel hood on the Kahr also peened so much that the slide would hang up on it. Kahr would have a great product if they'd fix their reliability issues, heat treating issues, and make the slide stop like the Ruger's. But I digress.

I bought the Ruger on Gunbroker. I paid a little more than I'd like, but when I checked with my local shops about ordering one, they pretty much said they couldn't help me as they were all allocated, whatever that means.

It doesn't seem to be on the CA approved list at this time, so I had to get a letter from my chief to pick it up. I am a LEO and this is for duty as a backup.

I too have read the great writeups in the magazines and seem the awesome groups the hosts on the gun TV shows have shot with it, but I thought you'd like to see the real deal. I've had my LCP since they came out and have fired hundreds of rounds through it without a malfunction. I'm sure this will be as reliable as it's little brother. I'll follow-up after I've put some rounds down range with it.

On a side note: a lot of people talk smack about Ruger claiming that they ripped off the Kel-Tec P3AT and now the PF-9. The Kel-Tecs that guys at our department carry tend to be jam-o-matics. My friend is one of our range masters and he hates qualifying off-duty guns when people show up with Kel-Tecs. They get a round or two off and then choke. If Ruger copied the Kel-Tec, the Ruger product would also be a jam-o-matic POJ. Ruger has invested the considerable resources of their company to make a reliable weapon that "looks like" the Kel-Tec, but that's where the similarities end. At the end of the day, Ruger is not going to put their name on something that doesn't work, and if there are problems, like the LCP recall, they will make it right. They haven't stayed in business this long by producing failures. Kel-Tec is happy to roll out weapons of questionable reliability which is not a responsible practice given that their weapons are intended for self-defense. Go to KTOG (Kel-Tec Owners Group) and see for yourself. One of the first stickies is how to "fluff 'n buff your Kel-Tec to make it run.

That's just one man's opinion based on my experience, yours may be different and is just as valid.

Great pictures. Looks like pocket carry will work for me as I can pocket carry a J-frame. Let us know how she shoots.

It means that the distributors that carry these guns are only getting a few each. Between 8-14 per week most times.

Each distributor has a whole bunch of retail stores that want one and only have 8-14 so they have to pick and chose who gets one.

Nice! I really like my LCP and will be getting an LC9. The sights on the LCP are surprisingly accurate, I hope the same is true for the LC9.

Why do you need the letter from the Chief to purchase off roster handgun? I though all you need is your department ID and driver license? I am picking up my LC9 in a few days.

The chief's letter gets you out of the 10 day wait.

Hope it shoots well for you; I was thinking about one, but the fact that it's not much smaller than a SR9c means that it's pointless for me to get one.

They are on the roster, at least as of today.

The PM9 is smaller. If you can afford one, get the PM9.

ETA: It's more comparable to the CW9. For a just a tad more, I'd get the CW9 over the LC9 as well.

Ruger ruined the LC9 when they added the CA features to it.

I checked just now. If it's a yearly renewal, it's been approved since the 7th.

I get mine out of the 10 day gun adoption sanctuary on the 7th. Bought one for me and two of my kids.

It felt really good in my hands.

Glad to see it made the roster.

BTW, that stupid roster needs to go away.

The Calif AG website shows it added eff. 3-8-2011.

I'm very interested myself. Looks like a beefed-up LCP, slightly shorter barrel than an SR9 Compact (3.14" vs 3.5") but with a smoother snag-factor. Incidentally, Ruger.com shows MSRP on the LC9 as $443. Gotta wonder what the Kalifornia factor will do to the price.

JeffM - refer to my original post regarding my experience with the Kahr PM9. Congratulations if you're one of the lucky few that has one that works. I'm not willing to play that lottery again with a gun that is around $800. Kahr had an awesome concept with crappy execution of that concept. Wish it was otherwise. Same deal with Kel-Tec. Your mileage may vary.

vintagearms - it ships with one mag.

LC9 in right pocket, extra mag in left pocket. Kind of hard to get the pistol out. Not accessible while driving. I'll be ordering a Milt Sparks VM-2 ASAP.

Already on roster! That explains why they put a loaded chamber indicator on it.

Just goes to show you that manufactures can get them approved if they throw enough money at it. Wonder who got paid off to get that thru the pipe so quick?

What?
What do you mean throw enough money at it? What the heck are you talking about? Any handgun can get approved if they meet the requirement (loaded chamber indicated and magazine release safety) and pay the fee to stay on the roster.

You are paying way too much. I bought mine from Proforce for $344.99. Extra mag is $22 each.

You're absolutely right, but it comes down to supply and demand. Nobody around here has them or is going to get any, so the only option is online. Plus I'm impatient. I'll write it off on my taxes as an unreimbursed work expense, so that'll save me a little bit.

I just checked and did not see them on their most current flyer or website. Did you go in person or special order?
