Default When the Zombies strike, I'll grab my SKS instead of the AR.

I have a very nice AR platform rifle.

I also have a Romanian SKS made in 1959.

When I pick up each one and generally play around with them, why do I want to use my SKS over the AR?
There is something about the SKS that makes me want to toss the AR, but don't get me wrong, I like the AR as well. But, but, I don't know.

I'm not getting into the 7.62 v. 5.56 argument, they are what they are. It's just that..........

My SKS is like a bold and brash cowboy outlaw, while the AR is like....well....... a metro-sexual.
I don't want to go into Zombie battle feeling inadequate.
Please help.

I feel you. I actually have more fun shooting my sks to boot. Something about the five feet of fire that shoot from the muzzle and the $4/box ammo.

I hear ya, the SKS has the added bonus of making for a quite capable club. I'd be afraid to hit someone with my AR...might scratch it.

It's the wood stock. I'm not sure my AR could take it if I tried to butt stroke someone with it. Just one more reason I'm saving for an LRB M14.

It will if you bolt the new (all alloy) Ace Hammer stock onto it...

I see the allure of the SKS (I own one) but....nah...but not one of my favorite rifles.... Hmmmm, maybe I need to get out and shoot it again..

there is something about the feel of that hard wood.
As you know, I'm a sucker for good looking wood.
I was thinking about bringing it up to the Sierras this summer and carrying it around in the BLM for a day or two, so we could bond, then maybe do the same thing with the AR.

Thats the problem with buying a mouse gun, it makes you fee like a metro-sexual. Thats why I bought a mans gun. No wimpy, skinny feminine guns for me.

The 7.62 x 51 gets her done.

I've shot an SKS, but I don't own one. Maybe if I did, I would share your enthusiasm. For now, though, my AR'll do me plenty of good against them hordes o' undead.

I love the SKS too, I have a AR, and an AK. The SKS is just rock solid reliable, accuracy is great for what it is. I always recommend one for people looking to get their first centerfire rifle that they can depend their life on. It's cheap, ammo is cheap for plenty of practice, good cartridge, easy to operate and maintain, extremely reliable, easy to handle, the list goes on and on.

I want to jump on the SKS bandwagon also. One of these days...

In the meantime, Saiga 762's and AK-47's to stave off the Zombie Apocalypse for me. An AR doesn't cut it in my eyes. Also, there is firsthand experience that the 7.62 is better against vehicles than the .223/5.56 is.

Ya know, there is something very appealing about shooting simple old school (some would say second-line) rifles like the SKS, Ruger Mini 14/30, etc. They still can get the job done.

I love my SKS. It's a milled receiver Norinco.
When World War Z breaks out, I'm grabbing my AUG. It's 26" OAL and won't get in the way of my cutlass.

did someone request zombies? Their not too far off.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_upshot...control-fungus

'Zombie ants' may sound like the title of an Ed Wood movie, but, according to National Geographic, they are quite real.

Oddly, there's nothing very zombie-like about the actual ants. It's only when a particular fungus takes over the ant's brain that things get weird.

Once the "stalk of the newfound fungus species Ophiocordyceps camponoti-balzani infects an ant, the ant gives up control over its own body. After the fungus is in control, it forces the ant to scamper toward "a location ideal for the fungi to grow and spread their spores." Then, it's lights out for the ant. Who knew a fungus could be so diabolical?

These wild discoveries were made by a group in Brazil headed by entomologist David Hughes. National Geographic published a series of pictures of ants that have "lost their minds" to the fungus. You can check out a sample of them below. Not for the squeamish.

The handguard is just a replacement part that can actually be found on Amazon.

The stock on the other hand? I don't know. Fajen made stocks for these for awhile, but they look a little different. Some guys on the SKS survivors forum have suggested that it was hand made by a guy on their forum that used to build these. I haven't contacted him to see though.

I bought this rifle as-is and I have a blast with it.

Coupla' more pics...

Lovin this line...

http://www.deathvalleymag.com/2010/0...fle-of-choice/

"The FAL is a weighty rifle not a backpacker’s rimfire .22 cal squirrel gun like the one fielded by the Amy Strong crowd in the States."

"It’s a rifle built with purpose, and a choice tool from a more refined age of weapons design. The FN FAL is ‘Infidel Strong’ and in the right hands is an instrument of terrible visage that has and can send the AK and track suit crowd from Sadr city ducking for cover."

In the meantime, Saiga 762's and AK-47's to stave off the Zombie Apocalypse for me. An AR doesn't cut it in my eyes. Also, there is firsthand experience that the 7.62 is better against vehicles than the .223/5.56 is.

This rifle is beautiful in my book.
Some of the CruFFlers will say that the owner committed a mortal C&R sin, but I don't think so.
I love great looking furniture and when the steel looks like it was all meant to be together, then you have a nice rifle.
If you ever consider.....
