Default Chamber pressure and muzzle energy

According to Wikipedia, the chamber pressure of the .50 BMG round is 55,000 psi, more than double that of other handgun calibers. The muzzle energy is in the 15,000 foot-lb range, about 30 times as great as a .40 S&W fired from a handgun.

single-shot conversion.....

barrel more than 6.5" - check
OAL more than 11" - check
fixed mag only allowing 1 round at at time - check
50 BMG law in CA - does this only apply to rifles?

.50 BMG handguns are Destructive Devices, that's why you don't see many of them.

Handgun bores are measured differently than rifles. Though the .50 BMG bore may be the same between handgun and rifle, unfortunately one is a DD and the other isn't.

hmm this is a tricky one

making a handgun 50 bmg is a destructive device cause it is greater than .50

but what if you build it first with a 18 inch barrel oal greater than 26" then it would sell it and it would be an "other"

then shorten the barrel and register it as an aow

the thing looks like it weighs 30 lbs, accuracy, seems like it would be nil, due to the short barrel, and recoil. i doubt that the bullet would stabilize either.

The 50bmg is one of those weird cartridges where the longer the barrel, the greater the recoil.

The energy involved in pushing a 700 grain bullet out of a nice short barrel is (relatively)low. The fireball you see is a lot of perfectly good rifle powder going FOOFFFF!!!! out the end of a pistol barrel.

can you prove that? Don't point to the .50AE round used in the Desert Eagle. The DE uses a polygonal barrel that doesnt' have conventional lands-grooves, and its minor diameter is over .50" to shoot a .510" bullet, whereas a conventional barrel is .500" lands, .510" grooves, and legal. The .500 Linebaugh Magnum revolver has been made for years with a .500"/.510" barrel and hasn't been ruled to be a DD.

I notice the thing isn't drilled and tapped for a scope - I'm guessing none would survive the first few shots.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.950_JDJ

Pfft, 50bmg

Quote:
The cartridge propels its 3,600 gr (230 g) bullet at approximately 2,200 ft/s (670 m/s). This yields a muzzle energy of 38,685 ft·lbf (52,450 J)[1] and a momentum of 154.1 Newton-seconds, about the same as a 20x102mm Vulcan round.[citation needed] This kinetic energy would allow the .950 JDJ to pass through several body-armored humans. It is comparable to the original tank rounds of World War I in terms of ballistics

Those of us who own .50 BMG rifles do not want that gun in CA. Amour piercing handgun ammunition is illegal in CA and when that gun first showed in the press, it was a way for DOJ to make our .50 cal AP ammo illegal. It's a good thing that gun is nothing more than a novelty.

So AP .308, .223, hand loaded .30-30AP, none of which are handgun rounds, are all illegal out of my Contender?

That's the same as saying .22 long RIFLE rounds cannot be fired from a pistol.

armor piercing handgun ammo is illegal. That is why you can't get ap 762x39 anymore, because someone made a commercial 7.62 pistol once. I think it was Olympic. But I don't think it is just a California thing, I think it is an ATF thing.

Yes, and No.

AP handgun rounds are illegal. One reason Barnes was asked to cease making banded solids....

So go ahead and own all the AP 308 and 223 and 30-30 AP ammo you want for your rifles. The moment you plunk the round into the chamber of your contender pistols, not legal.

Anyone who's ever loaded a brass round made AP ammo. Pretty sure all steel core ammo is AP. All OK to shoot from rifles.

As for the BMG pistol vid, I have one word. Trailboss. And assuming that guess is true, I'll lineup to shoot it
