Default L.A. Gun buyback program reduced gang homicide by 66%

Thats what Villaraigosa and Charlie Beck said today to promore their gun buyback program. So the gangbangers turned in their guns for grocery cards and lived happily ever after.

Wonder where they got these numbers? Wonder what idiot would believe these numbers?

The guns turned in are a joke. These two "public servants" are a joke. More like public dis-servants.

Shameful to have people like this leading the city.

The gangbangers probably paused to buy up weapons cheap.

They turned in used murder weapons for LA to dispose of for them. It makes it more convenient because gang bangers really don't need to be bothered with driving outside of the city or taking a boat out to dispose of their murder weapons. Then it takes a week or so for them to find a new one again. Then commit some more crimes with the new one and wait for the city to take care of the next one for them too.

One more example of law enforcement telling the media exactly what to report.

You want to know where the original source of firearms misinformation comes from? Hint. Reporters are lazy and clueless. They don't have time to write propaganda and tailor lies.

How would one go about proving that statistic? Apparently the city of Los Angeles has an office of future crime. How else would they have known that it was that buy back and those very guns which were tuned in that lead to a reduction in the homicide rate.

They don't have to. When it comes to the LASD, there is zero fact checking, despite the fact that nobody in the local socal media industry trusts the LASD.

Why? The LASD is one of the biggest sources of news for local news stations. Why should they bite the hand that feeds? Especially in conjunction with some completely idiotic PR stunt on the part of 2/9 to appear to be the "good guys" in partnership with LASD?

Where in the hell are these numbers coming from? First its 91% support background checks, and now its an 66% reduction in gang homicides?

The small sample size of participants that take all the online polls are not representative of the general population, and sure as hell not representative of gun owners. As for the 66% reduction in "gang homicide", I'd love to see the hard statistics on that.

They are lying. Plain and simple.

You guys ever listen to Freakonomics? Its a podcast where two economists look at all sorts of different issues and apply economic metrics. They always have some interesting perspectives to offer on whatever issue they take on.

They looked at guns and gun regulation in a recent episode. Mr. Steven Levitt declared that gun "BuyBacks" were the most useless form of gun control out there. He is not a "gun guy". He is a "truth in numbers" guy. He 100% decried buybacks as a waste of resources and a useless exercise in paying non-criminals for their guns.

http://www.freakonomics.com/2013/02/...radio-podcast/

Check it out. Personally, I like Levitt quite a bit even if he is "liberal". He's really damn honest and his show is centered around cutting the BS out.

Los Angeles liberal heads are going to explode when the libertarian leaning Koch brothers buy the parent of the LA Times and Chicago Tribune. According to lefty "journalists" and whacked out college professors Libertarians are dangerous right wing extremists.

They probably made the numbers up, just like our dear leader and the "90% of the American population favor..." Does! Lead by example!

And the liberal sheeple will blindly believe whatever their socialist masters tell them, and call you a racist if you ask where they got their facts, or show them evidence contradicting those numbers.

66% sounds a "little" high to me.

Hmmm... if the Koch brothers buy the times, what will the readers do then? Subscribe to the National Enquirer?

These frauds don't share their methodology or numbers because their million "low-information voters" (****ing idiots) believe any "fact" they hear in a sound byte or read on a Facebook post.

Every time Tony Villar open his mouth, John and Ken at KFIAM640 have a field day with his comments. The most memorable one so far has been regarding Villar joining a think tank to rethink his position.

Participating in a gun buy back because you believe that the
criminals have too many guns is like having yourself castrated because
you believe that the neighbors have too many kids.

Got the above via email , sums it up quite well

I couldn't find a link for this. Two weeks ago, Villaraigosa and Beck attributed the drop in violent crime to more police officers, community policing and gang prevention programs:

Quote:
Crime in Los Angeles dropped in the first three months of this year, with violent crimes dropping by half over the past eight years, top city officials said Friday.

The new statistics follow a trend that Police Chief Charlie Beck and departing Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa attribute to the increased number of police officers since 2005 and an emphasis on community policing and gang prevention programs.

"[The] crime rate is at a record low because the police force is at a record high," said Villaraigosa, who joined Beck at a news conference to announce 2013's first-quarter crime rate figures.

The numbers released Friday also compared the first quarter of this year to a three-month period just prior to when Villaraigosa first took office in July 2005, with Beck underscoring the mayor's role in reducing the crime rate in Los Angeles.

"This is a mayor whose commitment to public safety, whose vision created the GRYD [Gang Reduction and Youth Development] office, whose understanding of the world, of Los Angeles, has cut violent crime, gang crime and homicides in half since he became mayor," Beck said.

Why are you guys complaining? You need to learn to spin it like they do!

My response:
"Awesome news. As we have said all along, the law abiding citizens aren't the problem. It's time to reverse the guns laws and start going after criminals. With a 66% reduction, you should have ample resources and manpower to squash crime completely. As a taxpayer, I will support current budget levels as long as the crime rate continues to drop."

See what I did there. Tie pay to performance. Once they fail on performance, the pay gets cut. Our republican leaders are lazy if they don't start using this "news" in our favor. Stop arguing with the data, start using their data to win.

Not to interrupt the ridicule fest here, but has anyone verified the OP's claim? From the article I found above, I'm skeptical.

Whenever no link is provided, it's a bad sign. Just saying ...

They may be tying the massive drop in crime over the last few years in general to buy ups.

That's the only way I can think of that wouldn't be an outright lie.

Sort of like long lines at the DMV stop DUI.

Its not a lie, its just bull****.

I can't believe you guys are questioning the honorable Mayor Villaraigosa and Chief Chuck. I for one totally believe them. I've seen the guns typically turned in at the buybacks and there is no question in my mind that 66% fewer gangbangers are dying because their guns aren't blowing up in their faces when they do drivebys.

The stat could be accurate !
When these guys plug each other in record numbers ,eventually the pool gets smaller !

Time for big democratic media and big Hollywood to glamourise the gang drug culture again .

Charlie Beck has been successful in only one area during his regrettable tenure ,he has made Willie Williams look like a genius !

These lying political hacks have no statistics to substantiate their claim.

Either that or they misread the stats. It is probably really "gun buybacks reduce crime by .0000000000066%"

I think when they first came up with a number they thought the public would never believe it, so they just turned the number upside down...
