Desert Eagle Mk XIX in .44 Mag is on CA approved handgun list. One cannot purchase a .50AE Desert Eagle (or any other caliber), but can purchase a .44Mag version and buy additional barrel/magazines to convert from one caliber to the other.

http://certguns.doj.ca.gov/

Desert Eagle Mark XIX DE44CA/blk oxide / Steel .44 Magnum is listed.

So it's legal for sale in CA until 7/19/2007, or beyond that if the extortion fees are renewed.

You can also find a used one in different calibers and finishes and FTF transfer in state.

Roster of handguns legal to sell shows the baby eagles in 9mm. .40, .45 all ok, and the mark xix in .44 mag. (.50AE and .357 not listed)

There's no California law to make a DE .50AE illegal now if it had been sold here before.

What a range might do is up to them.

If you bought one before the stupid DOJ cert requirement they're perfectly fine and legal. The only one approved for brand new sale by a FFL is the Desert Eagle Mark XIX DE44CA in .44 mag. No other model can be sold in Kali. However, any previously owned ones can be sold PPT.

As to the downsizing thing, that has nothing to do with legality. If, say you owned a Desert Eagle in one caliber already, you can buy the conversion bolts, barrels and magazines to change it to another caliber.

How to legally get a Desert Eagle in CA:

Buy the approved .44Mag model from an FFL.

Buy any other one PPT from another person.

To get a .357Mag or .50AE:

Do as above to get the base gun, then buy a caliber conversion to the caliber you desire.

Gunsamerica suggests about $1,000 - and up.

Try google for a start.

A friend was offering his (50rds through it, near new condition .50AE) for $900 a couple years ago. No idea if it's still for sale - we lost contact.

Desert Eagles are legal but protected...not as gamey as California condors, pretty good eating.

If your interested, I will tell you what the current wholesale price is. Then you can judge for yourself what is and isnt a good deal.

I cant post prices because it's against the rules again.

I would much rather have the S&W 500 personally.

No, and why would you want to. The 44 Mag is a great caliber and much cheaper to shoot whether you reload or not. It costs me about 15$ for a box of 50 50AE's if I reload them myself and much more if I were forced to buy them. I could load up a box of 44's for about 4 bucks. All that said, the 50ae is a hoot to shoot.

I always wanted to do a 50 necked down to 357 but I just found out that RCBS doesn't do custom dies any more. It would have been a rocket round though and I figured I could have taken some white tail with it from a good distance.

One would keep it. You can own it just can't buy it via FFL without person to person transfer.

Handguns (minus the uzi/tech9/assault types) don't have a "preban" designation. It is simply illegal for new handguns to be sold if they are not on the DOJ certified list. Viewed by most as a means of extortion and control on the industry, the DOJ claims it as a safety measure. Either way, it's ridiculous.

Any handguns that aren't illegal via SB-23/other AW bans are perfectly legal to own, posess, keep, and shoot. Furthermore, it's legal for you to buy handguns not on the list and bring them into the state, or PPT them used from someone in the state; it just isn't legal for a CA FFL to sell them to you.

A refinement:
it's legal for you to buy handguns not on the list and move into California and bring them with you into the state and register them as required by law.

Just in case someone might think it's legal to buy non C&R handguns out of state when one is only a California resident.

And I certainly agree the Roster is only a means to reduce the number of firearms in the state; there's no other effect of the law.

Anytime. I'm thinking about getting a 44Mag barrel myself. I figure I could have nearly as much fun for 1/4 the cost.

If you are going to buy from magnum research website check out their cyber specials. When you buy a barrel they throw in a magazine. Not a bad deal.

They used to make barrel in 440 corbon which is 50ae case necked down to 44.

Rarity now tho.

Heck, that would be more fun than a 44Mag. I have plenty of 50ae brass, it's the dang bullets that are expensive. If I can load 44 bullets instead then I'm shooting cheap. I'll have to check out this 440 Corbon.

LOL, never, I have one of the old VII DE50's. Good try though. The old ones have a nicer action and trigger. I picked it up when the XIX models came out and the price dropped to 900 on them.

I got a XIX in 50ae and in 44mag. I reload the 44mags with H110, the fire ball and boom get more peoples attention then the 50ae. Cant wait to start reloading the 50ae, haha. I shooting the 44 a lot more then the 50, but both are a lot fun.

Hey, news to me since I haven't bought a new gun in a few years(while I lived in the PRK) but DE's are now made in Israel again. The bad triggers and action that I was talking about was the US made ones. I have no experience with the ones comming out of Israel now but I'd hazzard a guess that they are back up to their former high standards.
