More Off List Lowers were Drosed to Rabbits in Northern California than you want to know. I would rethink the hunting thing.

Have a good day,

About the only place where I know to hunt rabbits around here is at Grizzly Island NWR up in the Suisun area and you need to use a shotgun (with steel shot I believe). You will of course need a basic hunting license. July 1st opener.. Limit on Cottontails, not sure about Jacks..

Other than that, do you know some farmer with a rabbit problem that'll let you shoot on his property?

For the most part you can hunt rabbits on any public land that is not a park or wildlife refuge.

Open a map of the area your hoping to hunt in and see if it matches up with anything in the BLM or forestry maps.

Seek out other hunters in your area. They may have leads or private lands to hunt on.

I dont hunt in the north bay so I'm crap for help up there. My dad used to hunt west of Vallejoe.

I live in Rodeo and while technically it is the "East Bay" most people think of East Bay as Oakland, Fremont, Hayward, Berkeley et al.. so I refer to my Area as Northern East Bay, close to Richmond. It's also known to those in Contra Costa County as West County.. I think of North Bay as anything north of the San Rafael Bridge, of which Hercules, Pinole, parts of Richmond, San Pablo, and then the cities of Marin, Napa, and Solano Counties actually on the Northern SF Bay and San Pablo Bay. Some would consider Cordelia/Suisun in there, but to me that's the beginnings of the Delta.

He did refer to the North Bay, so I have to ask WHICH bay we are talking about here? Near SF or somewhere WAY north like Eureka?

If that's the case then Yes, Northern Cow Mountain would be closer than the marshes of Suisun and probably suitable for rabbit hunting IF there are any up that way.

Public land is great to hunt on if they allow it. A lot of state land thay do not allow any hunting on, but if you can find national forest or BLM land (like someone else suggested), they usually allow hunting with restrictions. Some State game refuges allow it (Like Grizzly Island). Probably want to check with Fish and Game.

Just drive out to any desert area... you'll find plenty of jackrabbits.

any desert area...

Um, not worth my gas money, but down in your neck of the woods, anything outside of LA is pretty much desert..

I'd have to head NE to Alturas, East to Reno, or South to Mojave to find anything resembling desert.

Ok, next question... are we looking to Varmint hunt or are we looking for something to put on the table? Jacks are not known for their edibility... Cottontails on the other hand, while small, are known to be better table fare.

Too Early? Jackrabbits are all year around.

Though your kinda screwed for nor-cal, cotton tails you're limited to 3, and i believe those are seasonal. Probably be reasonable to find private farmland area and ask for the ability to hunt there.

Don't forget you're required to use bird shot for rabbits. So make sure if you decide to use a 22, you use 22 shotshells.
