Default Gun safe required?

A buddy of mine recently purchased a gun locally and was asked if he had a gun safe. He said yes, even though he doesn't. I've purchased 3 handguns while in California and have never been asked that question. Why was this question asked?

If he had said no, they would have pushed a gunlock on him. A safe or a lock is required.

Hope your friend didn't sign a safe affadavit when he didn't have one.
That's perjury.

You probably weren't asked because the guns came with a CA approved safety lock.

Your friend could have signed the ownership affadavit and sold the safe the next day.
