if someone "manufactured" a 10 round .458 magazine, then technically you can legally buy it in CA. ???

No because it was originally designed for .223, and guess what it still holds 30 rounds of it. Is it legal to own an RPG if you say you were just going to hit him with it? . So no, unless you modify so that it cannot accept 30 223 rounds and only 458.

Of course you can buy a ten round magazine. My ten round M1A mag holds 100 rounds of .22LR, does that mean it is illegal too? I am sure the .458 mag uses a different follower, so as long as you do not switch out the follower, you should be fine. It won't function properly without "tweaking," so "tweaking" is illegal.

I read something along these lines about guys buying up 10 round .40 XD mags, and stuffing them with 12 rounds of 9mm, and they fit perfectly in a 9mm XD. Dont know how true this is, or if it even works, but just what I had read somewheres.

A lot of .40 mags will work fine in 9mm guns and take an extra 2 rounds or so of ammo. This is legal too, as long as it's an unmodified mag and still takes .40 bullets.

I think if someone MANUFACTURED / PRODUCED the magazine as FOR the .458 round, it would be legal. Things to identify it as a .458 magazine versus a .223 / 5.56mm would be to mark the magazine body with ".458"

BTW, it probably wouldn't be good if you were pulled over with 30 .223 rounds in your 10 round .458 magazine...even empty .458 mags with your AR-15 (5.56mm upper) and no .458 upper in sight would look bad too.

I think if the followers are modified with central concave surface so it won't double stack 223 and open the opening bit more so 223 would just pop out then it should be ok. And some 458 socom stamped floor plate to go with it.
That should be ideal for 10 rds of 458 socom rounds in your legal lowers.

In theroey, it is at least legal to posess a 10 round .458 SOCOM mag, and 30 loose rounds of .223.

Wether it is legal to load .223 into said mag and fire it out of a .223 AR, is another question. (I wrote DOJ on this exact issue, use of a 10-round capacity magazine with more than 10 rounds of "sub-caliber" ammunition. They refused to answer, stating only
