Default How I got shot thru both legs wit a 9mm...

Just thought I'd let people know about my story. I am a gun nut for sure and always felt safe at the range. Taking a class at Frontsight in nevada with my brother and friends was one of the funnest vacations I've ever taken. That was about two years ago.

Last month some friends and I decided to take a pistol/carbine course and having heard of one near by in sonoma county we thought we were in for an amazing day of fun and learning.

Cut to the day of the class: Picked up my brother and headed out to the property, he was complaining about lack of sleep due to a party he had gone to the night befor. After reaching the property the instructor instructed us to lay our wepons on the table with actions clear and slides locked back.

1st mistake: My brother took his cz to class with a loaded mag in the gun.(he thought it was empty)
2nd mistake: He failed to remove the magizine while attempting to lock the slide back.(loading one in the chamber)
3rd mistake: Attempting to rack the slide with too much power he actually dropped the gun.
4th mistake: He tried to catch the gun...he caught the trigger...and I caught the bullet...thru both thighs, just below my family jewles.

Upshot: The bullet felt like a solid punch to both legs...I did not fall, instead I turned to my brother totally pissed and full of adreniline and told him he shot me and he was an idiot...then I start walking to the car as everybody else is asking if I'm sure I'm hit...about halfway to the car I called for assistance and was carried the last 25yards. The pain didn't hit till we were out of the driveway and then it hit hard! Probly the male equivelant of child birth. Putting pressure on four 9mm holes with only two hands proved to be a problem so I just had to settle for putting pressure on the worst bleeding two. That was the longest twenty minutes of my life to the hospital. Doc said if an artery had been hit I would have bleed out in 6min. X-rays showed no major arteries/nerves/tendons were hit so they stuffed some drainage tubes in all holes and sent me home. Two weeks passed in a blurr...oxycotton and percocet were my best friends. Bathing the open wounds with hydrogen peroxide 3 times a day was a serious amount of work an pain. One month later all wounds finally closed and I can walk enough to go to work. Physical therapy/swimming is what I get to focus on for the next couple months. I'll never be as fast or as strong as befor, but I'm happy to be alive.

I'll see ya'll at the range...please be safe!

Sounds like you lucked out given the circumstances, gld that you are ok. A buddy of mine took an AK round to both legs just like you, he was almost as lucky, managed to return fire on the guy who shot him and killed the guy, then let the medic start first aid lol. He has some serious scars on both his legs from the surgeries he went thru.

assuming it was a FMJ?

also, did you have a "metallic taste" in your mouth after you got shot?

you have some serious self control. i would have definitely used more colorful language then thrown some adrenaline powered fists

Wow. Glad you're OK. It's a good reminder to the rest of us to be careful and stay focused and alert. And a good demonstration that a handgun wound is both serious but also not necessarily incapacitating.

Glad you're alright but this was the 1st mistake:

"he was complaining about lack of sleep due to a party he had gone to the night befor."

You don't allow a half drunk/half asleep person to handle a firearm yet alone attend a carbine course.

Sideshow, yes fmj! No metallic taste in mouth, though I was more concerened with surviving so I could have missed it.

Rero, he was shooting a saiga 7.62x39 as his carbine and don't think I havent conidered what the diffrence between 9mm an 7.62 rounds...thank god!

Blackdog, thats why I keep the .40 and the 12ga in my bedroom for the bad guys! 9mm just not enough even with jhps.

Recession+1

Thanks for all the best wishes!

Wow, one of the reasons stopping me from taking any carbine or pistol courses. Getting shot by inexperienced students.

I hope you learned to never be around your brother ever again while he is handling a weapon.

Drinking the night before a firearms class. Carrying a loaded weapon and thinking it was unloaded. Dropping a weapon due to incompetence. Trying to grab a falling gun.

That's a whole lot of nudges towards the shallow end of the gene pool.

And here i thought the people who go outta their way to get proper training would be one of the safer people to shoot with.

Glad you came out on the other side of this deal -

And you are right - Exactly the reason I prefer my .45 over 9mm.

You most likely would not have "walked" away if your brother had a .45 -

And you should take away all his guns. Period.

Damn. Hindsight is 20/20.

I suggest that next time y'all go shoot together, you absolutely check each gun that is with you guys before you put them in the car.
