Default AR Rifle/Pistol lower question...?

Is there anyway I can legally use an AR Pistol lower with a 22L rifle upper..?

Are all AR Pistol builds required to have the lowers marked "Pistol" - And are dedicated AR Pistol lowers only allowed to be used with a AR pistol upper...?

And if so - Is that determination based on barrel or over all length...?

Searched around and confused the crap out of myself.

Time for another scotch...........

Thanx, DISC

it has to be less than 16inches. Once you slap on a 16inch bbl, you have created a rifle, which IS legal, however you now cant go back to pistol if you do this.

If you want an upper in 22 for a pistol, just build/buy one.

How does anyone know which upper was on that pistol lower yesterday?

I actually was going to build a 6.8 AR Pistol - And it would be much easier if I could tell the wife she can use the lower with the 22L rifle upper...

Switching to Johnnie Walker Green....

Sucks that you have to do that to explain it to your wife but once you put the rifle upper (either 22LR or std center fire) with a 16 inch barrel you have created a rifle... BTw once you you put a stock on its ..it's a rifle too...

Build two (1 pistol and 1 rifle) cheaper and keeps you OUT of jail...

Btw you know what you did even if the cops don't ..Do it right and legal!

This is beyond ca laws, this is a federal issue. "Once a rifle, always a rifle. " you would be creating an illegal short barreled rifle by switching back to a pistol upper.

If you want to debate the practicality of this law, I wouldn't do it on a public forum.

i'm new when it comes to ar's and i've been on google and searched calguns too. i want to build/buy an ar pistol and also would like to know. this is the only "ar pistol faqs" like post from ar15.com.

from what i'm getting from this post. its okay if you put on a stock and upper with a barrel 16in or longer with a marked pistol lower. also following state law. then switch in back to its pistol forum.

its not okay to slap on a stock, making it a SBR and illegal. also not okay if you get a tax stamp making it a SBR, you still can not switch back to pistol.

but laws are laws and i'm not sure about cali laws when it comes to ar pistol to rifle. so your safe bet it is to build 1 pistol and 1 rifle.

Now I'm getting conflicting info on the AR pistol lower.

It "seems" that you need to buy the AR pistol complete to remain CA legal -

That simply buying an AR pistol lower is NOT CA legal.........

True or False....?

Partially true. If you can find an AR pistol lower for sale by an individual who legally possesses it in California, you can purchase it via FTF transfer. What you cannot do is buy an AR pistol receiver from an FFL. The other option is to manufacture your own lower receiver from an 80% blank.
