Default Very good argument against "safe storage" law

Sorry, this is probably a dupe, but I somehow hadn't run across this until now and didn't see it posted on the forum.

The Merced Pitchfork Murders
http://www.lewrockwell.com/poe/poe1.html

This just ruined my day, but it does give a very good argument against the "safe storage" law.

Yes, it's a dupe - "On that terrible morning of August 23, 2000, " - story is 11 years old.

But certainly it shows some problems.

Heller was 2008. McDonald was 2010. Things started getting bad with GCA-1968.
It takes time to unwind 40 years of bad law.

This is a very sad story if I wonder if the neighbor regrets not going in to take care of that nut job.

Thanks for posting the story. I wasn't aware of it.

I saw the date, that's why I said somehow I had never seen it. I was wondering if posters here had seen it either.

It seems to have been covered up well by the mainstream media, much like the SLO sheriffs issue visited in another thread.

There is no requirement to lock a gun where kids can't get to it in CA, but you ARE responsible if kids do harm with that gun. If Mr. Carpenter felt it was safe to leave the gun unlocked and loaded where his daughter could get to it he was well within his rights to do so.

Only responsible if the harm done is not in self defense, though, IIRC. Your 13 year old kid could kill a bad guy and you would not be held liable, yes?

That is my understanding. Though it is not a BAD thing to be responsible for stopping an assault in progress.

Right.
There was a thread about a kid defending his mom with his 22 rifle. He shot the intruder who was broke into his home and was entering the bedroom.

My mistake, it was five under aged children.

Nobody thinks parents coddle children way too much these days more than I do, but dude, the mother left the house with the children still sleeping in their beds!
What if there had been a fire?
Worse yet, what if a mentally deranged drug addict broke into the house?
