Default Question on MOA bases

One of my setups requires nearly 90 MOA of elevation to run out to a distance I want to work with. I have a Leupold VX-III 6.5-20x50 LR target and several sources state this rifle had 94 MOA of internal adjustment. If I add a 40 MOA base and take half of the available internal adjustment it gets me real close to 90, 87 theoretically.

Assuming a perfect world the scope would have 47 MOA up and 47 MOA down from mechanical zero. With a 40 MOA base it potentially only leaves 7 MOA left to drive the POI far enough down to get a 100y zero. Is 7 enough to play with or am I on the ragged edge of not being able to get a 100y zero.

Thanks in advance.

Do you have to have a 100yd zero? With a setup like you are talking about, how much time do you spend shooting at 100yds?

No, I haven't even bought the base yet. Ill probably set a 200y zero when I get it. I have bought other firearms where the rail was sufficiently out if line with the barrel that I only had 1/3 up and a massive 2/3 of total travel down. I ended up putting a 20 MOA base on the rifle to fix it. The current build is off a R700 platform, simple so everything should be straight. Just concerned that if I throw a 40-MOA base on and something is slightly off i may have to actually hold under with the reticle at 200y because the turret is bottomed out.

Wow... just out of sheer curiosity, wacha shooting and how far you shooting that it requires 90 MOA or nearly 26 MILS of elevation? That's epic!

still doesnt explain why you want a 100yr zero if you are shooting 2000 yards?

Good point. Ammo too expensive to waste at that range and I'd likely develop a load at 300y. I'm over it, 40 MOA base it is and now off to you tube to learn about "bedding a base." Oh the joys of bolt guns.

You can't have both. Its possible to use a LaRue mount that maintains zero after removal and use two optics, but I find it hard to believe even a LaRue will hold a 2000 yard zero after removal and re-mount.

It couldn't. In a world of bedding bases, lapping scope rings and bedded actions the tolerances aren't there; if so people wouldn't bed scope bases. Aside from -06 and 22-250, I'm very new to the magnum bolt gun world; can recognize one 5 out of 8 times.
