Default California shooting ranges indoor/outdoor database - Google Earth 150+ ranges marked!

I thought I would start a little Google Earth project for our fellow Cali shooters.

Objective: Mark and locate all the indoor/outdoor shooting facilities in California on Google Earth.

Google Earth can be downloaded from here: http://earth.google.com/downloads.html

For those that haven't used GE (Google Earth), it is a mapping program utilizing satelite photos. It has many neat features, which include 3D elevation & GPS coordinates. You can use it just like MapQuest, Yahoo Maps, etc.. to get directions.

================================

PLEASE feel free to ADD any new shooting facility or shooting area: other indoor ranges, outdoor ranges, and your favorite desert/mountain spots to shoot that are legal.

If you are marking an outdoor shooting spot that isn't a range, please try to include BLM or US Forestry links showing that shooting area is an authorized shooting spot.

I will try to incorporate the updated placemarks and NEW locations onto a master (*.kmz) file.

There is a couple of ways you can help with updating the master file.
* You can post the GPS coordinates & info on this thread and I can manually input them onto the master file.
* You can SAVE (File => Save As...) your Placemarks as a *.kmz file and then host or email the file to me. I will then import them into the master file.

To get the GPS coordinates. Put a Placemarks onto the spot your trying to mark on Google Earth. Try to be as accurate as possible. There are several ways on placing a Placemarks. Click the thumbtack pin on the lower right or [CTRL] + N : To insert a new Placemark. You then have Name & Description field you can fill. Click OK to place the pin.

You can right-click the Placemarks to move the pin or edit the info. If you click the "Advanced" check box, you will see a "Location" tab that will have the GPS coordinates.

DOWNLOAD this file to get the current master list.

I appreciate your post very much, as that's exactly how I would like others to add new placemarks to the main file. It will make adding other points of interest very easy.

sorry for being the dumb guy, but what kind of software can open a ".kmz" file? My PC asks me what software to use as soon as I click on that link.

thanks

Updated file once again.

Over 140 California shooting ranges marked!

If you have a range that isn't yet marked, please pass the info (address or GPS coordinates) and I'll add it.

Those were some of the first ones I added. Did you download the file and look at it?

Default google maps

having to come back to this thread and have to upload or re-download google earth files seems like kinda a pain.. i just implemented a custom mapping app for my company that uses google maps to map locations of shipping destinations for our truck drivers. the google maps API is really easy to use. im sure i and anyone else that feels like helping could come up with some sort of web page that shows all these gun range and BLM coordinates along with the info with them. dunno if calguns would be interested in hosting it or if this is even an idea anyone thinks would be handy.

*shrug* just throwin that out there.

Yea, I've looked at that one a few times. I just wasn't sure if that was the range bldg or it belonged to the Quarry. Thanks for clearing that up. Can you confirm that I got it right in the picture below. Thanks!

Added to the database.

That's it. From looking at it, you'd never guess it was out there, let alone a 100yd indoor range.

I've never used it, but they appear to have a nice setup.

Just bumping this thread.

Anyone have any more ranges or shooting spots to add??

I know there have been some closures of the outdoor areas in San Diego areas. I will have to go back and add some notes to the next update to reflect the changes.

Thanks guys, but I already had all those in the database. Like I posted on the first page, I think the list is over 156 ranges, so I have most of the regular, well known ranges already on there. Still looking for more to add to the list, so your input is appreciated.

When you load the Google Earth file. The shooting ranges are divided into three categories: Indoor Range (41), Outdoor Range (92), and Outdoor (desert/forest) shooting spots (23). Make sure the three categories are check marked so they show up on your Google Map as pin marks. Then check to see if the ranges you know of, are marked or not. If they're not marked...let me know and I'll add them to the next version of the file.

I found a bunch a large list of skeet & sporting clays ranges. I'll have to cross reference that list with my Google Earth database to see which ones I don't have. http://www.claytargetsonline.com/list.php/CA

BLM and Desert shooting areas, although BLM should not be too hard to find... those little off the beaten path desert areas are. Would love to have those added into the list.
I now must download google earth at home instead of just using it here at work

Yea, sad that SGVGC was close. I really liked that range.

I have an updated Google Earth file, I just haven't provided a link to it yet. I was in the middle of adding more ranges, from a list I found. But, I forgot where I left off, from the list I was using.

It can take me a while to find some of these ranges, as the directions are hard to follow.... as most of the directions are for locals to follow... that know the area. I have to follow roads, as if I was actually driving...to find many of the remote gun clubs/ ranges.

I'll post a link to the updated file soon.

OT?
What's the best way to definitelfy map out BLM land? I'm just paranoid that I'll be shooting or hunting in the wrong spot. Being in Rancho I'm not far from the outer areas and really want to know. Esp. with coordinates that I could plug into the gps.
