Thumbs up

That mag turned out great. I am definitely going to have to make a 10 round mag for my 91/30. I should also do it for the Mauser too now that I think of it.

So are these on order yet? I've been watching this for a while now. Like others have stated, a little sanding and finish fitting isnt a problem for the die hard mosin fans.

I've been watching, seen nothing, he is a busy man. I just hope that someone else doesn't trump him and come up with a plastic version before he can get into production.

Well, if that were to happen, that would make *two* sources of mags, which would not be a bad thing. Not a bad thing at all. :-)

I wouldn't mind that at all. When these things come out they are going to be flying and it'd be easier to manufacture them and leave them in the white with minor details left unfinished. I wouldn't mind finishing them myself.

The way my patents are worded, they should still cover me even if someone used a different material.

Rest assured, the mags are still on the table. I'm just trying to get myself into a "real" workshop at the moment so things have been crazy lately with the day job and trying to save up a nice cushion of cash to cover my downtime as I move into the shop, set everything up, etc. The mags will be one of my first projects in the pipeline once I get situated.

Thanks for your enthusiasm, everyone! It takes a little while to bring something from "idea" to "product", but we'll get there!

If they work and your patents/lawyer can stop the fakers I wouldn't be surprised.
How many MILLIONS of mosins are out there in the world? Everybody can use this. The bubbas and collectors alike.
It is a great non-permanent modification to the mosin.

I just read through this thread. The link was in a post on the AK Files Gunsmithing Forum.

This should be a great way for you to move up financially. Maybe not retire, but still a great boost. I don't know of any Mosin owner who wouldn't want to HAVE one of these, even if they didn't use it. The fact that the rifle need not be permanently altered is a big plus in my opinion.

Although I live where mag capacity is not an issue, I believe that the appearance of your 10 round unit is just about right. It might start looking awkward, and be awkward to handle if it were much longer.

Thank you for your efforts, and I hope you are rewarded for them.

I'll keep watching for production to start!

Props for all the hard work, ingenuity, and craftsmanship. Hopefully you'll be able to manufacture it. If so, I'd love to purchase one.

I say upgrade to a belt fed Mosin, no need for magazines or stripper clips, plus upgrade to a bolt on M1 Carbine cone flash hider. Especially on a M44 or M39. You could hang a 30-06 ammo can on the side for a 250 round ammo belt (cloth of course). Make the belt advancing device from and old S&W or Colt ejector rod from a revolver that will advance a round on open while stripping a round ready for chambering and a ball on the bottom of the bolt to keep the belt below the bolt so it will close and chamber. Really not too hard of a project if you have the time.

That magazine is cool though, 2 piece stamped design really a good idea rather then a 4-slide formed one. I do not think (2) stripper tacked together will work though unless you added a section to the spring to make it a full length flat spring.

A vac formed plastic mag may be a bit eaiser though, made maybe out of Zytel or Kydex, the forms can be made of wood, easier to weld the two pieces together with an ultrasonic welder. That would leave a flat line weld that would not need to be sanded down. Keep the hangers metal and thermo inserted while being formed. You could actually use a home hobby vac form machine, just would have to move up to a heavy duty heater for the sheet plastic.

Lots of interesting options though.

I do not think hogging one out of solid alum would be too hard either with a mill and cnc the mag hangers and latch.

This is a very good thread to give thought to.

Is there any way to make detachable mags? A 10rd detachable mosin mag would be pretty sweet.

PingPong: Well the magazine is detachable, but I am not sure just how the 10 round will work, but the orig 5 round, the floor plate detaches by unlatching and then compressing the spring & follower and lifting it out. Not sure if that will be the same on the 10 round.

It may not even need a relase due to it being a magazine and it will come off with just releasing the latch. The only thing I am trying to figure out is how the rounds stay in the magazine. The lips of the mag may need to have to be bent in a lil, but then, I am not sure how that will affect the positive feed system built into the back of the box and the bottom of the bolt the MosNag has in the 5 round orig configuration . Either that or you never remove the 10 round mag with ammo in it (the rounds would be shot out of the mag into the air) and keep it fixed and only use stripper clips.

The MosNag looks like it is designed simple, but it is designed by sheer genious for what it is. The round being rimmed certainly throws a kink in the mix as well, the magazine may need to be more curved or over angled (like the ,303 Brit Enfield magazine) in the end design, maybe even a little of both.

Using an SVT mag design may be an alternate answer, just the design and not the actual mags as you would need a loan on the house just to buy one. A thumb latch like the SVT would also work as well. Here is a pic of the SVT40. Either the latch system or the box would need to be changed on the SVT mags or the rifle itself to remove the magazine with rounds in it. This whole concept for an 10 or more round mag for the Mosnag truly intrigues me. I wish I lived closer to the Op to help him out with this as I have a ton of ideas on this whole concept. Then there is the consideration of the change taking the gun off the C&R list for each individual gun that is altered. BTW, the SVT also uses the 7.62x54r round and in its design, they had the same issues we are currently discussing as they were going from bolt action to semi-auto. BTW I meant more curved than the Ops design for sustained use over years.

I have 14 MosNags, all different if you would like a beta test on most MosNags for the measurement tolerance issue, I am more than willing to do it and return the mag(s) for research and developement. I can even CMM them and send you the results via cad on a mem stick.

Republic of South Africa, there is a 12 ROUND MosNag magazine, it is not allowed to be imported for some silly reason or another. It was shown in an earlier SOF magazine. I believe it was made by the company named Swartklip, division of Denel, in Capetown RSA 8000. I have been trying to get one or two for 7 years now. Some of their bullets are imported by Armscorp in Baltimore, MD.

I have some Yugo training rounds if you would like a reduced power round (out to 75 yards good ballistics, after that, they drop off drastically) and are not in any way steel cored, the core is empty. Send me your addy in a PM and I will send a couple boxes of them. These are the Grey tipped rounds.

I am so excited about all of this I can hardly think about anything else LOL

I def, regardless of price will buy at least 14 of them.

Sorry, to clarify by detachable I mean detaching the entire magazine housing so you can quickly swap in a full magazine for an empty.

The magazine isn't a normal "magazine" as such, because it doesn't keep the rounds inside while removed. I think it would best be described as an "internal magazine extension".

I would market it as such. I think what you were looking for is, it's not a "detachable magazine" but rather an internal magazine extension.

So the basic idea is that it replaces the floorplate of the original magazine and extends it to hold 10 rounds, right?

It occurred to me that rushing into production on something like this could be a risky business adventure. I'm not sure where the OP is, in terms of production, but before these go into full production they must be fully tested. I don't know what these would cost, I'm thinking no less than 25 dollars maybe more. Just a few failure to function episodes could turn a great idea into a disaster. The OP's reputation and financial future could very well be at stake. OP, take your time, get it right, make some money and make your family proud. jt

Freaking amazing! Now, not just the 10 round magazine, but also the Mosunov! Data, if you get a chance, what is the weight of the Mosunov stock compared to a regular 91/30 or an M44? As far as suggestion wise, would you consider keeping the sling slots (I see the one in the front, but none in the back) integrated as well as a swivel stud hole forward of the magazine for a bipod attachment? Hell, with the magazine and that new stock you'd probably be able to retire just off sales from calguns and gunandgame forum members, lol. And that video review offer still stands!

Thanks, Savage! I'll try to weigh it and see how it compares to the original stock (the "stock" stock?).
I'm trying to find an M39 rear band because the swivel matches the shape of the Dragunov sling on the back, but no luck so far. Those things are pretty scarce, apparently. I have actually added an M39 front band to the Mosunov already and had the idea of turning the bayonet tab into a kind of mini rail with an interchangeable bipod and trail flashlight. I'll keep the video offer in mind, thanks!
