Default My Mossberg 500 Persuader "tactical" shotgun

Since I am more of a black rifle guy, I decided not to sink a lot into a shotgun that I would only use so much. Considered it more for HD, but also to just have a shotgun in my collection and now, I have a complete "3 gun" option. I looked at the Remi 870 and thought it a nicer feel and fit & finish, but when it came down to it, the sale price on the Mossberg 500 Persuader at Big 5 was just to good and it already came with the adjustable stock & shorter forend so I could fit the side saddle.... so, I decided to just go that route. All in all, I might be into this $550 total for all you see here thanks to the sale and prices off the interwebs. Not bad really.

Here are a few mods I made to it as well:

-ATI heat shield
-Tacstar side saddle
-UTG picatiny top rail
-UTG QR flash light mount
-NEBO flashlight
-Hogue 17110 grip
-Extended tactical safety
-Choate colored follower
-Ultimate Arms Tri-Rail Forend
-TruGlo TG93A high viz front site
-Ergo ambi sling plate

Man... that's quite a tactical looking blaster ya got there. And plenty of rounds on tap, that's for sure. Mossberg 500's are great guns and I'm sure that one will serve you quite well indeed!

I'm a lot simpler in my approach... here's my "Persuader"...

Six rounds of 12 gauge 00 Buck on a light, lean, nimble and quick pump gun works for me! (With a pistol or two
in reserve, of course).

I once had an additional six-shells in a buttstock sleeve shell holder, but honestly, I just found the extra shells
to be in the way and figured I would never need them with the lifestyle I live. Six will do the job for me! YMMV.

How does that light hold up? It seems like a pretty decently priced setup can it take 00 and slug recoil?

I bet not well, I had the same light holder on my persuader and it would come loose. My new set up pics are coming soon.

not sure just yet, but for $8, and the fact it is one of the ones you see used all over, it was worth a shot. I am sure it will work fine, and if it comes loose, it is an easy fix with a lock washer or some black RTV. Not going to spend a ton of money on this and I suspect, as much as I saw them on other shotguns on the web while searching, I should be GTG... but when I get a chance to shoot it I will report back honestly.

dude, you should have gotten a 590+knoxx spec ops stock+holo site+flashlight and that would have come out to the same price but you would have gotten so much more gun for the money.

590 wasn't on sale at Big 5
590 is longer 20" barrel, no?
don't need a holo sight
got a flashlight + holder
mine has an adjustable stock, no need for a knoxx & see no reason why it's better + the knoxx doesn't have a shell holder already attached

was pretty clear I didn't care that much about shotguns, this was easy, fast, cheap. this works and in the end, if for the price I got what you list, I got more as I got the tactical safety & 2 side saddles & heat shield & picatiny... so in the end, I doubt "come out to the same price"

that's what I'm thinking, I mean I'm not really into spending 100-200 for a SG light because I do not think I will ever have shoot slugs and battle an army of zombie bikers in the middle of the night any time soon.

Hahaha... that's funny. I got my 500 Persuader from Big 5 on sale too like two weeks ago and the price was to good to pass over the Remington 870. lol BTW, where did you get the upper picatiny rail from?

Mossberg does offer the 590 with an 18"barrel
http://www.mossberg.com/products/default.asp?id=26

I think eccvets feels that if you have something different from him, or paid more, than you made the wrong choice.

The Moss500 has been around for decades. It will serve you well.

No, I think that for the same price, you could have gotten more gun for your money aka you overpaid just a bit here but hey, its your money. Spend it how you want!

P.S. if you really think 2 inchs is gonna make a bit of difference and that its not worth one more shell in the mag, you really got another thing comming.
Also, if you think adding weight to your gun via 2 side saddles makes it more tatical or better in any way for shooting, you also got another thing comming!
In the end, I guess I just dont want others thinking that $550 will only buy you what you got when you could have more. !

Here are a few mods I made to it as well:

-ATI heat shield
-Tacstar side saddle
-UTG picatiny top rail
-ATI flash light mount
-NEBO flashlight
-Hogue 17110 grip
-Extended tactical safety

A few future thoughts I was considering would be a set of affordable ghost ring sights - the rear that mounts on the picatiny rail and something tall enough and matching for the front that mounts via a band (chime in if you have ideas) - or a TruGlo TG93A. I also like the idea of a colored follower, but do I read correct the Choate will reduce the magazine capacity? So maybe a Dave's aluminum.

That's all good, but your shells are upside down. (Edit: I meant this mostly tongue-in-cheek, as it's probably another Ford/Chevy thing. But nonetheless something for folks to think about and decide what works best for them...)

funny.. I was thinking of this exact thing after I posted photos, having just finished mods minutes before taking the photos, I just put the shells in and took photos and posted. later, as I started doing some drills, I knew instantly that I would be, and did, flipping the side saddle shells over - since they are on the opposite side of the receiver - as it made sense to me and my natural tendency to lay or hold the gun in my left hand/arm when empty and thus, pull them down with my right hand to load - thus the shells would be facing the right direction and quicker to load with no hand rotating or fumbling. So those were addressed the very next day the shells on the stock, on the opposite side, are less of an issue and it seems pulling down or up is about the same.

but thanks for the vid links

BTW, I also added a TruGlo TG93A in green. brigther than I expected, VERY firm to put on.. no way it can/will slide. interesting thing is that with the UTG top rail, which has a channel right down the center, the green glodot is well "framed" kind of like a ghost ring with sides.

man.. it is awesome. Even more so in connection with the top rail as the UTG rail has a nice center grooved slot that runs right down it and frames the TruGlo. As well, these TruGlo really stand out.

A technique I picked up where the stock holder comes into play nicely is holding the gun with the right hand, a shell in the pipe, covering the target, eyes on the target, stock still pressed into the shoulder, while the left hand comes up under the stock to pull the shells down and into the belly of the beast.

Pulling down works better for me in this case, but of course YMMV.

seems okay, sturdy, solid. not super high quality light. I liked it as it has LEDs, AAA's (so you can find anywhere), rear push button, and solid lumen output but it also has a red laser in it - right in the center of the LEDs. since a shotgun is not super precise, it seems kind of nice to have both in 1 unit as I do not need the laser to be hella precise on this. so I went for it. I certainly have better lights, but I left them on my better guns.

also put in a choate follower. Kind of a PITA to unscrew the magazine tube - as is noted elsewhere on the web, had to put the receiver in a vise to get leverage. But I liked the idea if a high viz follower.

New photos added with updated parts list.

You can now see the TruGlo TG93A in the 3rd photo.. nice and bright and can be centered right down the basic UTG rail. That 3rd photo also shows the tactical extended safety thumb button.

Also, I changed out the stock forend to a Ultimate Arms Tri-Rail Forend. Now, you will read all over the web this cannot be done, but as you can see it can be done. It does, however, require you to destroy the stock forend as it is heat shrunk and plastic pinned to to tube, but with a dremel tool I cut it off and reused the tube with the Ultimate Arms Tri-Rail Forend in about 5 minutes.

One thing I plan to do is consider a lower profile light mount that will mount on the left side rail. I used this now as I had it spare and it is a QR flashlight mount, but something a little lower profile is better for me.

Last thing I plan to change.. going to a Limbsaver butt pad for sure
