Default Selling a rifle in Cali: What do you gotta do?

If one is interested in selling a rifle, do you gotta go through an FFL? What's the procedure to sell a privately owned rifle?

Depends on the rifle.

If it's C&R (50 years old or more), you can sell it with no FFL.

If it's a registered 'assault weapon' you cannot sell it in CA to a 'regular' CA resident at all; can sell it through a properly licensed FFL to a non-CA resident or to a LEO with the right letter from his CLEO.

Otherwise, consignment or PPT, using an FFL.

The transaction must go through a FFL I beleive to perform a background check unless its C&R.

Re rifle/shotgun: Depending on the type and configuration, make sure his FFL will transfer that type of item.

Re handguns: If its on roster (or the person is exempt) then you can send it to his FFL.

In general: make sure his FFL will accept shipments from private parties, otherwise you will have to ship from your FFL to his FFL.

First, find a buyer. Do a PPT if you can - much easier.
If you can't do a PPT it's up to the buyer to find a FFL who will accept the gun. Make sure the buyer pays for all the shipping costs.
