Lightbulb 18yo finishing an 80%

Like many others on this sub-forum, I doubt I'll be able to wait for my 21st to come around to purchase a pistol. I'm impatient, but I'm also a perfectionist and very meticulous when it comes to things that matter to me, so I have no doubt that I will eventually be able to complete a project like this, and even if it takes a few months, I'd say that it would be worth it.
Now here comes the actual question, Is it legal for an 18-20 year old to complete a receiver from an 80% build?
and would the finished firearm need to be a long arm, or could I complete a pistol as well?
I like to step outside the box, but I my first concern would be if what I was doing is legal.

Note: I'm not doing this for any evil reasons, I like to take on a challenge, but even more, I like pushing the boundaries of what i am capable of.

I'm no expert but I believe you can build either one.

But it was my understanding Federal law prohibited ALL firearms to everyone under 21, and then granted an exemption for those over 18 who wished to buy rifles and shotguns. Which is why i thought an 18 year old would be unable to purchase a stripped receiver. Or is everything i just typed FUD? LOL I think this is unconstitutionally vague

that receiver will be a RIFLE receiver right? then there ya go.

I am unsure, is the law making it illegal when under 21 to
PURCHASE a pistol or...
OWN a pistol?

If its the latter, then you cant make that receiver say 'pistol' on the side.
In either case, you dont have to mark 80% builds anyways, so the point is moot.

I dont see any problems here.
Kudos for ya on being proactive and handy. I started with an SKS at 18 and just taking it down was a task for me. An 80% build is way beyond what I'd attempt.

The law only prohibits people under 21 from buying handguns or other weapons.

You can legally build a stripped lower or pistol frame. If you build a stripped lower you can turn it into a pistol or rife.

Very cool, thanks for everyones help... My first build will be a razor 1022 80%, and then from there, Ill decided if i want to do a 1911 or AR. It seems these are the most popular 80% receivers on the market.
Does anyone know if there are anymore 80% receivers for different guns? I really haven't seen very many.
Also, is it recommended to serialize homemade receivers and then register them? or will I just be legally safe with a pistol or rifle without a serial number?
Much appreciated,
Brett

Can the AK be finished without very many specialized tools? I've got a drill press but no milling machine or lathe. Could you point me in the direction of a tutorial?
Funny thing, Ive never even thought about an AK build, but it seems like such a good idea now, hmmmm...

If you build a pistol though, doesn't that create registration problems?

Check out this site. You can build ar45, ar15, ar10, 1911-a1 and many more. lots a good info. I am currently getting ready to work on my 80% AR15 lower, and then my 80% AR10 lower.
happy machining

A Parent or Grandparent can also transfer a handgun to you at 18.
You just fill out the paperwork within the time limit. IIRC it is ~$20 and 30 days. Not even a ten day wait.

Search CG for the details.

I appreciate the input Barry, but as i said I'm not doing this just to own a pistol or I would have had one long ago. I'm simply doing this to apply my skills, and more importantly expand them with a challenge that I would enjoy. I've decided I am actually going to do a Razor 1022 80% first for the plinker fun factor and for cheap training. (pm me if you would like to see my progress, and I'll try to keep you updated)
Then I'll move on to the more fun stuff

Don't place your progress in PM.... Start a "How To" thread in Rimfire.
I would also like to finish a razor and would like to see how you do it.

All the best

Barry

Yes its legal.

Many of the first homebuilt pistols in CA were done by 19 year olds.

Ak's, AR15's, Mac's etc....

Just go to an AK building party. They will have the bending jig for the receiver and the riveting tools. They build pistols the same as a rifle but you replace the rear trunnion with one that won't take a stock. Some will weld a folding stock closed to maintain the look.

Don't forget that you still have to follow CA law's and there is no 22LR exemption for pistols.

To get past the safe handgun list, it must be made as a single shot and then converted back to a semi-auto. If the mag is out side the pistol grip, like an AR, AK or the Ruger Charger then you must use a BB to fix the mag in place.

Can mrlonewolf or 69Mach1 or CSACANNONEER or SOMEONE (Insert your name here) make a list of EXACTLY what is needed to be brought to a build party to make a rifle and/or pistol?

When you buy the flat(s) from Curtis or Solar Tac., don't forget to also buy the center support for each, a set of rivets, a FCG pin retainer, FCG, and other 922r compliance parts. Parts kit should be numbers matching for the first timer, and with the orig. matching, non cut barrel. I also recommend picking up some extra rivet sets just in case. Pistol trunnions can be found at AK Builder (Curtis's website) or Copes.
