Default AR-10 build?

I've been doing some searching, and I cannot find any AR-10's built by private persons. Are there any DIY's on building an AR-10, or something?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

You're not looking hard enough... A thread on this very subject has been popping up almost twice a week.

The only difference between a .308 AR-style rifle and an AR15 is that you have to pick a platform: DPMS or Armalite. Technically, an AR-10 is an Armalite platform whereas the DPMS platform is called an LR-308.

Putting an AR-10 together is more like putting together an AR-15 when it comes to the bolt catch. The LR-308 uses a funny bolt catch screw and requires a special LPK. Both have slightly larger takedown pins.

Cheapest route is a TM lower for $210 and then a DPMS flat-top upper for anywhere from $700-1,200. Add a $75 DPMS buttstock/buffer/buffer tube combo and &60 LPK and that's about what you're in for. Apart from that list, sky's the limit.

All the standard AR-15 accessories should be interchangable right? Like the grip, quad rails, stocks etc?

AR-10/LR-308 have their own specified buffer and buffer spring...the quad rail on a free float tube for the AR-15 is different from the one for the AR-10/LR-308 platform. You are good to go with the grip and the stock.

"The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Let us know what kind of setup you want to build. Include things like cost, purpose, etc.

Nope.
Most grips will work.
Quad rails will be specific to the AR-10 or DPMS platform and are always more expensive than the AR-15 versions.
Some AR-15 stocks work while others will require special buffers or buffer tubes.

Colt does not make a 308 reciever.
Armalite 308 recievers are banned by name in CA.

Keep trying.
You have MUCH to learn.

308 recievers are considerably more expensive than 223 type recievers.

Some off list .308 lowers: Fulton, Aero, Iron Ridge, Tactical Machining, CMMG, JD Machine/Kaiser Defense, and POF. I'd suggest choosing an upper first because their are two styles, Armalite and DPMS.

Look at the pics, specifically the rear lug area. This is DPMS style vs Armalite style.

Look at the rear lug. The DPMS is more rounded and the Armalite is more slanted.

Ah, well dont I feel silly. Well I'm looking at both receivers online, but its seems DPMS doesn't show any complete upper assemblies, only separate parts to make one. Am I wrong?

will the difference in the slant/round rear of the assembly effect the fitting of the lower receiver?

DPMS style lowers with DPMS style uppers, Armalite style lowers with Armalite style uppers. That is why you need to pick a style first. DPMS style seems to have more options and cheaper. As far as which platform is best, I have searched that a lot and there is really no answer, both platforms are great. I went with Tactical Machinig (DPMS style) because their lowers are so cheap. Also, for both styles the fire control group of an AR should work but IIRC the bolt catch, mag catch, takedown pins are all different. I believe the only thing the same on the uppers is the gas block and tube.

I think the DPMS platform is cheaper overall to build. I do recommand Tactical Machining, www.tacticalmachining.com. Look at their lower receivers, for the money they are pretty good values. The only thing is you gotta find a gun shop that'll bring'em in for ya. Or just wait for someone in Calguns to put a complete 308 lower up for sale.

For the upper, you just need a little patience. Look around Calguns for a DPMS style upper. There are many sites to visit for deals too.

Overall it won't be real hard to put something together, just spend some time and patience researching what you want. If you find the parts cheap enough you could probably put something together for $1k-$1.2k ... Good luck on your build !!!

Just a side question but what do SR-25s and LWRC REPRs base their designs on? DPMS or AR-10

Try googling "side charging lr-308", or "side charging ar-10". I know they are available I'm just not sure of the manufacturers.

Fulton Armory (dpms) and American Spirit Arms (AR-10) are the only two companies I know of that sell a side charging upper.

This is an armalite upper on a dpms lower:

They physically fit, but are incompatible due to magazine differences.
The Armalite pattern guns have a stop shelf in the upper reciever:

that stop shelf impedes the use of DPMS magazines.

Do you mean Fulton is DPMS and ASA is Armalite? Do both companies focus on either DPMS or Armalite uppers?

Fulton recievers are made by DPMS and are fully compatible with all DPMS 308 parts.
ASA recievers are made by pakistani trolls living under freeway overpasses.

They are their own style, having a completely different barrel nut threading.

Just under $4000 for the brown one or $3800 for a black one.

Look at the pics, specifically the rear lug area. This is DPMS style vs Armalite style.

Fulton Arms Lowers are $H!T I bought one a while back and it had swirl marks sharp edges and left a gap between it and the upper when attached.

This shouldn't be a big deal because last I checked Fulton stopped shipping to Cali FFLs.

REKRAB has a nice one that went together well but I don't recall the maker. I will likely be putting together a new 308 in the next 6 months. I was inspired by Rekrab's when i saw it at Rahaagues [sic].
