Default Brainstorming: .308 AR Pistol

Am I crazy? This is an idea I've been batting around in my head for a while now. I'm currently waiting for the TM 80% lowers to become available again. But once they do I think I'll snatch one up and either build it into a proper rifle or a crazy-*** AR pistol.

Apart from the god-awful recoil I'd likely experience, what other issues should I take into consideration if I go through with this?

Hmmm, what would be the inherent benefit to a FAL pistol over a .308 AR pistol? Apart from cool factor?

I have no clue, not into ARs and FALs yet.

Cool factor yes, is the FAL a different operating system than an AR? Meaning the way it is design different?

I'm an AK guy slowing getting into the AR scene..

OK, I earned that. I've never denied being crazy. But can you think of any specific reasons Randal?

I wonder if anyone even makes .308 barrels that small? I'd probably need to bring it to you for a custom job.

I'm not aware of any pistol length 308 AR type barrels.
It's going to be loud as hell!

Do an HK-91 pistol instead. Looks way better since there's no buffer tube sticking out of the back.

Randal, that would be half the fun!

I would think an HK-91 pistol build would be exponentially more expensive...

308 crazy ? nahhh 50 beowulf pistol is nuts

the shortest length you would want to go is 12inches for 308

POF has uppers

Buy a really good muzzle brake like PWS and hydro buffer and it will be no biggie

This 7.62x39 one I built was fine without those

Thanks for the tips Stormy.

.50 beowulf was actually a strong contender for a crazy AR-Pistol, but the price of ammo just kills it for me. Interesting though, according to the Wiki, .50 Beowulf and .308 are about on par for raw energy while the .308 edges out by a few hundred ft. per second on velocity.

Still, price of ammo for .50 is just waaaaaaay too much for me.

No fun in having an AR pistol that costs an arm and a leg to shoot.

Looks nice Gio!

What's the length on the buffer tube and barrel?

I think you would just need to take a para lower, remove the folding stock, and maybe weld over the mounting holes, tada FAL pistol lower.

The guy who owned the shop I was working at had a FAL pistol, he broke it.

Default Do it.

An AR pistol in 308 sound like fun. I like shooting a friends Contender and Encore in various rifle calibers. My favorite to shoot is his .270. I can hit the steel gong at 200m with that one. The only one I haven't enjoyed so far was I believe a .444 Marlin. While the gas system should soak up a little more recoil than the Thompson's, I'd still recommend going with the longest barrel you can get on a pistol.

You can use any standard AR receiver extension. However, just as with the 308 AR rifle, you must use the correct buffer/spring. For a carbine, use a DPMS 308 carbine buffer and spring (spring is longer, buffer is shorter than a 223) with a standard 223 carbine length extension. For a rifle length/A1/A2, DPMS rifle length buffer/spring.

The recoil of the 308 pistol is not too bad. Anyone who wants to take a crack at it, let me know, and we'll go shooting. I'm free tomorrow (sunday) .

And for the record, the FAL pistol wins, hands down on cool factor and fireball!
