Default School Me on Laws regarding manufacturing guns 4 personal use from 80% lower or flat

I really want to build something, either AR/AK/HK style guns, from an 80% lower or receiver flat. I mentioned this to shooting buddy and he asked me "Can you manufacture a gun legally without some type of license or govt approval?" I told him I thought we could but would check on Calguns regarding specific laws and get back to him on it. He is also very interested in building something if it's legal to do so. Calguns, help us out!

Perfectly legal to build your own receivers/guns for personal use, just make sure to comply with all CA AW laws and the like. You don't need to mark it with anything unless you plan on selling it in the future.

There's also a sticky in this forum about legalities, but I'd like a link to a copy of an ATF letter also, so if anyone has it please post it.

yea basically you can manufacture for your own use any gun that is not considered illegal in the state of california. you can not make it for someone else and you can not sell it later. as you are the manufacturer if you decide to sell the gun down the road it is technically new. and will fall under all the current california new handgun purchase laws. meaning it has to be rostered. good luck with that. i can say that it will be just as cheap for you to just build an oll and a whole lot less work. if your looking for an off the books gun then thats one thing. but other wise you will have to comply with all the current awb laws any ways.
