Default Looking for a new AR

I'm looking to buy a new AR and I need a little help. I've used in the Corps and owned on my own ARs chambered in 5.56/.223 and pretty much know that it is not the greatest caliber. I'm looking for an AR that is chambered in something larger. The first thing is you should know is I need a left handed rifle. If worst comes to worst, I can use a righty, but would prefer a leftie. What uppers would you suggest and in what caliber to suit my desires?

Thanks much guys

You're really going to limit yourself if you want a left handed AR. the only lefty upper i've seen is from Stag.

True, like I said though; if the limitations for my left handedness make the options too limited, I have no issue using a rightie. I had to use one in the Corps and it didn't hold me back. I would just prefer to have a leftie. No biggie in the long run, as long as it has some good stopping power.

That's not a bad idea, what do others think about an AR in .308? What manufacturers?

I'm going to build one in .308 for my next build but im a right hander so not sure on what companies make anything for the lefthanders. I just like the .308 I guess, bigger is better right?

from what I understand the 6.8 is optimizedfor 300 yards. however it can and will reach out and touch you at double that with little effort. stag is the only one that makes a lefty 6.8 as far as I know. however if you like longer ranges you could look into getting a left handed upper and building a 6.5grendel upper. that is supposed to be a reallynice longer range projectile.

That sounds like a good idea, though to clarify; do you mean get a left handed lower and build a 6.5 grendel upper?

A 7.62 isn't a bad idea. The rifle above looks pretty nice too, tho I don't know for sure if this time I wanna go for a 16 inch again or something a little longer.

uh I dunno if they make left handed lowers. I was referring only to the upper. youd have to ask someone else about that because I know nothing about it.

There is another option of ambidextrious controls. http://www.bushmaster.com/products.asp?cat=501, if you scroll down you will see ambi controls. Are you looking for long range or under 600ms? If you go with grendel, you might want to reload as ammo availability differs. I did a small search and cabelas, midway and others were soldout with no backorder.
If you go 308(ar-10) it will be alot more expensive to build than your standard ar-15. You could go 243 wssm. If the brass bothers you, you could always get a brass catcher. Check this link for other calibers.http://www.accuracysystemsinc.com/ar15_conversion.php here is a stag http://www.proguns.com/stagarms-model2l.asp

Hell you could go 7.62x39 for real cheap.

Barrels are cheap, $100. Then just the bolt.

And I don't even have to say ammo is cheap.

I understand the concerns about the effectiveness of 5.56/223, the stuff the military uses for the most part is crap. Have you considered using a heavier grain bullet (75 to 77 grain HPBT) in this caliber?

My brother had to have something better than the 5.56, so he went out and bought a 6.8 SPC. We went shooting together last time I was out in AZ, and my 18" 5.56 rifle consistently outperformed his 6.8 at longer ranges using relatively cheap Prvi 75 grain Match ammo. He pretty much just slumped his shoulders and said "Crap....." He's in the process now of buying a barrel and bolt to convert that gun back to 5.56.

A 6.5 Grendel would likely do a lot better at long range than my 5.56, but the ammo, like the 6.8, is hard to find and expensive. Both 6.8 and 6.5 will require proprietary magazines to function in the AR-15 as well. Basically, cost goes up significantly when changing to a caliber other than 223/5.56, while ammunition availability goes down.

How far are you wanting to shoot? If it's 800 yards and under I think you might be better off just using a standard 5.56 with a 18-20" heavy stainless barrel in 1-8" twist shooting 75/77 grain HPBT's. This combo should be good out to 800 yards at least.

Ended up getting a 6.5 grendel upper. Now to get a lower.
