Dido!!! Awesome write up. I have been doing my research and reading on an Ak building, but this takes all the guessing out of it. Thanks!

69, Did all your parts and flat come from ak builder? I noticed some of the tools did...

Somebody please sticky this thread!

This is a tutorial for just the AK Builder trimmed and bent top rail AK flat, with the new flat bending jig. These tips and pictures are only for an AK 47 (7.62x39) build. I believe the AK 74 build may be slightly different.

The new AK Builder flat bending jig. There are three main parts to this jig. The base (die), the ram, and the bracket to hold the flat in place. Even though it looks indestructible, you can damage it if you don't pay attention and somehow line it up incorrectly or forget to back out the screws that push the ram out of the base.

The groove in the the base is an visual indicator that that is where the front of the receiver is placed on the base. The holes in the middle of the base is where the bolt heads that hold the bracket in place go into as the ram is pressed into the base. If the flat and ram are indexed backwards the bracket bolt heads will miss those holes and you will not be able to "bottom out" the ram.
That new jig is awesome.

This is really awesome! People should print a copy out and bring it to a BP if they get lost. I do like the fact you remind people to trim the lower rails because the first time I built an AK, I didn't know, no one told me and I was wondering why my mag didn't fit. Last BP I went to, I think I told everyone there and most people didn't know

Saved them some big headaches. Thanks Mach!

The write up looks great Mach! Great photo's, and even better info. Maybe you can do a "de-milling" write up next time, and that would complete the whole circle!!!

do we have to drill holes in the receiver so the rail can be spot welded in there? or does the spot welder make the holes on its own?

The spot welder makes holes..... but you don't want to do that LOL

Normally I heat treat and spot weld my rails before drill the holes for the axis pins because you are going to have to drill the lower rail anyways. Normally the AK builder ones aren't predrilled but I have seen some before that are.

LOL... you don't know how many times I had to tell people that at the BP. Maybe I should just wear a shirt with all the warnings people need at a BP?

I learned the hard way about the rails.. That and I tell everyone to trim you rails BEFORE spot welding Because if you don't have a dremel...... it takes FOREVER with a hand file and it is super hard because it is in the receiver already.

One of the cleanest builds I've ever seen.

If I may offer a comment--having built a few AKs and some other stuff, and heat treated a few thousand parts and blades, you're almost perfect on heat treat, but not quite.

First, a heads up that most of the heat treating advice online is worse than useless, it will destroy your receiver.

Second, what he has here is pretty good. Workable.

Orange or yellow is too hot, ESPECIALLY in daylight where colors don't show well. It's not quite as critical with a thin section, but I'd go to a bright red in shadow. An easy cheat is to use a small magnet--like on the back of a scribe--when it won't stick to the metal (austenized), it's hot enough. Give it a couple more seconds of heat to make sure, then quench in oil, fast.

Your tempering advice is correct. Just to the top of blue, just as it turns gray. Don't get back into dull red or you'll have to start over, and thin stock can't take that often.

If you have a furnace, you can also treat the whole receiver using a jig like this.

It'll be a lot stronger, but does take more work.
