Default Shipping your own gun from state to state

Can I ship a handgun I own to a family members house out of state and then have it sent back later? Fedex or other type of courier

Yes, you may ship a firearm to yourself, c/o another person.

Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

Now, whether or not Fedex will accept that shipment, I don't know. I think that UPS will allow you to ship a firearm to yourself. YOu may not use USPS to mail a hangun since you are not an FFL.

If you are planning a trip to see a relative out of state, and one of the activities you have planned is to go pistol shooting, and you simply don't want the hassle of trying to deal with checking in a firearm at the airport, you can ship your handgun to YOURSELF in care of your relative in that state or the hotel where you will be staying. This is perfectly legal. The shipment should go through Fed Ex and be shipped overnight. They tell you to declare that the item is a gun (do they check? I don't think so) but not mark the package in any such manner. DO NOT ship via us mail because that is a violation. If you're concerned about theft then disassemble the gun and only send the receiver this way, the other parts can go however you choose.

Now, if your trip gets unexpectedly canceled after you have shipped the firearm, there arises the question of how do you get it back. Best answer I have found is that you can go get it yourself, or you can have the c/o recipient ship it to an FFL in your state.

If you are asking "but what I wanted to do was to ship it to a relative there and have them ship it back to me without transferring ownership" all I can say is there is no provision for that in the law that I am aware of, however once the package arrives, who is to say how it got there? Food for thought.

I've read the remarks about the owner at the "old West Gun room" in El cerrrito-i bought my girlfriend a Ruger pistol(she was visiting me every two weeks, i lived in north CA, she lived in southern CA). Having waited ten days, i wanted to ship it to her home address in Huntington Beach, CA.He said that was not legal. So we end up taking it home in a locked case on the airplane.

Who did the paperwork?

If you did all the paperwork and picked it up 10 days later, that's your gun and not hers. You can't just transfer ownership to a girlfriend like that in CA. Only parent/child/grandparent/grandchild transfers can do that.

Now, if she did all the paperwork and then left it up north with you, you could legally send it back down to her in her name.

But the way you describe it, you bought her a gun and did all the paperwork yourself and just want to ship it to her without doing a legal PPT via an FFL.

YES. I regularly overnight my handguns to Florida when I visit. I take a red-eye and get in at around 7am. Fed Ex delivers my package around 10am. No airline hassles.
