Talking Would like info on Women's Training

Hi! I'm actually helping out with the Calguns booth in Vallejo in June (a few months away! but always prepared right! )

We are hoping to reach out to more women shooters. So there was a thought of getting a list together of training/reloading courses designed specifically for women or new shooters in general.

I know of a couple courses available but would greatly appreciate any additional info that you may have.

Please PM. Thanks!

Hi CookieMonsta. I think it's awesome you're doing that! You sound so friendly, I'm sure you'll attract lots of girls to your booth! I'm hoping to go, and if I do, I'll be sure to stop by and say hello

I'm by no means an expert, but based on the carbine classes I've taken I don't see anything special about the training that would require separate classes for women. Just sign up and come on out.

Sometimes it's easier for us women to learn, feel safe, and comfortable amongst our own, at least at first.

Not all, but a number of the training courses I've been through have been uber testosterone fests... LOL

Indeed, especially with newer women shooters I could definitely see that they could be more comfortable amongst other women...

This is a husband/wife couple who offer courses in the LA area as part of the Suarez organization:
http://www.suarezinternationalstore....angelesca.aspx

This particular course above is not really for beginners, though, and I think they just had a starter course earlier this month...

Fair enough, but I guess my point was that the training would be the same in terms of what's covered and how it's covered.

having taught mixed classes with women and women individually, believe me it is a different communication style...same what, different how

it doesn't need to be a female instructor...although there is an additional "comfort" factor involved...but the relationship between instructor and student is different if you want to impart the most information

We've had plenty of opportunities teaching women. We're more low key than the tactical shooter / instructors.

Would much rather teach from a beginner to individuals looking to learn personal protection and to what we consider "In California Style Home Firearms Defense" that isn't going to get you looking like the bad guy.

Handgun / Shotgun Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced Sessions Available

Maximum group size is 4 for a class to keep personalized attention and teach Tuesdays - Saturdays. Do many coaching sessions too. NRA Certified, DOJ Certified.

NOOOOOO! I hate it when there are women at matches! It almost always means the rest of us get bumped down another place. Hell, I've loaned a woman one of my 50s for a match and she shot better scores than me with my own gun and reloads. Luckily, I was shooting for groups but still. Anyway, give me a call and I'll try to dig up a few things from SHOT that might help you.

Default courses for women

Olive, You will make a great ambassador for calguns and gun owners in general. Thank you.

I offer all my introductory courses for women. Pistol 1, Tacticle Carbine and Defensive shotgun. Although I don't put them on the calender until there is some interest. I also have a page dedicated to women on my site.

Most guys don't realize the differences in training a male vs. female. There are some significant physical differences when teaching the pistol specifically.

There are some issues that present themselves when teaching the presentation with conventional holsters made mainly for men. The issues are ones of ergonomics. Women tend to have shorter torso's and longer legs. For some women trying to get a firing grip on a high ride concealment holster is very difficult. Especially in a course where the idea is to build muscle memory through repetition. This is just one example.

There are some mental differences that instructors should know as well. There is a good book on the subject written by Vicky Farnam & Diane Nicholl, " Teaching Women to shoot". I recommend it to anyone who teaches women or a women thinking of researching the subject.

These differences should not be ignored by trainers or students. They have an impact on the female students enjoyment and weather or not they continue to train or just check it off there list. It also effects there effectiveness from a defensive standpoint.

Peace,

Chad Herr

In the case of the Alpine clinic we cover pistol, rifle, and shotgun. For $25.00 we include eye/ear protection, targets, ammunition, loaner firearms, and refreshments. Training is one on one. Each student has a mentor with them the entire time they are on the firing line, and a different mentor for each discipline. The clinic is approx. 4 hours long. They book up quick so don't wait to sign up.

Here's a list of all WOT clinics in Ca.

Thanks for looking into this, cookiemonsta; it's good to see you getting involved!

-That NRA-women's program looks good and I'm interested in working with you to see if we could get one hosted here in Fresno.
-I also need to go talk to the guys at DFTraining in Coarsegold(they lease a pistol range at the Sun Mountain range, behind Chuckchansi casino).
-My lady and I just went to the last Appleseed marksmanship training and I highly recommend that, we had ladies, children and fathers who all showed big improvements, even a few of the very experience guys learned a few things but it mainly caters to rookies/novice shooters. Appleseed is FREE to women, children(under 21) and active duty military; for us dudes, the $45/$75 1day/2day is pretty dang cheap for the training you get.

I've got a group of 4 couples in Fresno (4 for sure and a few more maybes) that want to do a Basic/Intro handgun class.

Olive, looking forward to meeting you in person GF

We'll have time to chat about shooting. I'm sure you've already received a lot of helpful info, but I'm happy to add what I found to be comforting when I first picked up shooting.

You have a safe drive and see you in a few!
