Default AR-15 Conversion From .223 To .308

It can't be as easy as purchasing a .308 upper and an AR10 magazine and just putting it onto my AR15 lower is it?

You need a 308 lower and upper. Basically you need a completly new rifle.

The .308 rounds are longer than your magwell. There are a ton of calibers that will work in a 5.56 lower, but unfortunatley .308 is not one of them.

Try to see if a bare 308 round will fit in the magwell of your 223 rifle.

You can also try 6.8 SPC. It's a very pleasant round to shoot and there are about a dozen companies making complete uppers for it.

Main forums page "search this forum" button on the top right or Google search would have worked.

The link to the 30RAR was cool, TY.

Regarding the above 6.8 and the .308 lite or 7.62X39...On any of these, I can just purchase the upper and mount it to my lower and it will work?

Sorry for the silly questions and I really do have bad luck with the search button. I seem to put something in which I think is some major keywords to search and about a hundred different things come up pertaining to to just one of the key words...I guess I need a tutorial on searching...again, my apologies.

The standard AR platform is designed around a cartridge case length of approximately 45mm with a case head diameter of 9.6mm.

The 7.62 case a case length of 51mm, and a much larger case diameter of 12mm.

They will not be interchangeable in the standard platform.

This comparison of a 5.56mm Colt Delta HBAR lower and a Knight's 7.62mm SR-25 Match lower should make it clear why it can't be done.

Why not ? Why let other bias info. bother you ?

You'd miss out the fun if you don't. 6.5G is a alternative to use the AR15 to reach the range of AR10.

Sorry to say but I'm getting really tired of the rifle forum being filled with crap. Use the search button or common sense. Either one will work.

the 6.5g fanboys have become the herpies like infection on this site, you can't post anything without some one suggesting you get a 6.5g. Stay on topic, the OP was asking about the dynamics of .223 to .30 conversion and if it was possible in the ar-15 platform NOT ABOUT THE 6.5G.

It's part of the fun on forums.

This thread could have been virtually closed by the 2nd post. It's obvious that the AR15 is not for 308. However, others just give their opinion about what you can do with the AR15.

If you do a search, you'd see how many thread already asked if AR15 can work with 308.

Since the 6.8 SPC was mentioned before the 6.5 Grendel that sort of negates your statement.
BTW, I don't recall that you were made a moderator on this forum.

So what you are trying to say is that I can't use .308 brass with a .223 bullet loaded with 7000gr or RL15 to make a .243 upside down on a stack of hotcakes? i'm confused.... Is the bottom lower a .338LM or a .408?? Where does the trigger pod lock go??

Are both of those using the cut-back trigger interface? Is the one in front bigger or is this one of those optical-illusion things I read about on the interwebs? Why can't I hamburger?

Sheesh, if I had known that asking a simple yes/no question was going to cause all this turmoil...

Thanks though to those who took the time to answer me and give me a little more knowledge than I had before.

Ever notice how grendel people think it's the answer to every question, even the ones that were not asked?

Go 6.8 SPC. I think the military has adopted this round and ammo prices will probably come down.

haha, NO.

SAAMI has standardized it though.
That's why ANY company can produce the ammo to published specifications and expect it to work in any gun made to the same published specs.

The 6.5 Grendel manufacturer refuses to publish his specs or let any company use the cartridge's name without a licensing agreement.
Therefore, nobody wants to make guns or ammo for it because they don't want to have to pay commissions to a 3rd party.
This is what will uptimately keep the grendel from ever becoming a commercial success.
