The gun requires mil spec 7.62x51 ammo and will not work with most commercial .308 since the OAL of the cartridge is critical. Inexpensive linkers can be purchased to assemble unlinked ammo into belts with Israeli/IMI links. CA magazine capacity limitations apply.

The gun is 7.62x51 as sold, but aftermarket parts exist to convert it to any of these calibers:

30-06
8mm
7.62x39
.22LR

Don't forget 7.62x54R

Also, my old 1919a4 ran great on Russian 308. Steel cased stuff was fine, and cheap.

Also, please note, that if you did not have the links linked up prior to 2000, you will NOT be allowed to link up belts greater than 10 rounds. (you would be mfg. a hi-cap mag at that point)

What does 1000 round of mil spec 7.62x51 cost? It depends on where you buy it. As far as linked ammo goes, you buy links and link your own 10 round or less belts. It's not hard.

Well... to be more specific, first you have to find the disintegrating Israeli links (about 7-.10 per) Can be found at Ohio Ordnance Works. However, there IS a concern about shipping them to CA now as technically they are a feeding device kit at that point which of course could be use to assemble a high capacity mag (i.e. illegal) Although, sometimes folks around here will sell them to you already put together in groups of 10. Then, you may also want to get a plate linker from Ohio Ordnance (about $180.00) to help things move along a bit faster.

BTW - 7.62x51 gets expensive at .50 per or more. Better to get your 1919a4 converted to shoot Russian 7.62x54r at .22 per.

More available. Get them while you can!

With an MG3 tripod and correct adapter mount, this is possible and legal :
