Seeing this is the Northern CA sub forum, I'd say Fort Bragg, CA. Hopefully one day in the great state of Jefferson!

A CalGunner totally hooked me up! Which reminds me that I owe him Beers!

I will be working in the hospital setting, training in MedSurg, but will eventually transition to the ER.

I shoot on a regular basis here in SoCal. So much availability here and I have my group of buddies I go shooting with, including one of my best friends. I am leaving that behind and going to foreign land.

Have always liked Ft. Bragg, been going there from time to time since the early 70's.
Just a heads up, there is a surprising amount of gang activity there. I don't know why, you wouldn't think so but there is.
LOTS of dope growers there in the surrounding woods and properties.

Just something to be aware of.

Although I'm one more county north, let me welcome you to the north coast, it's a beautiful place to live. As a board member of the economic development commission, I can also say that we value medical professionals, you'll be filling an important role.

I concur with the comments above about Usal, great scenic spot although some ground clearance helps to cover those last few miles of single-track road after leaving SR 1.

While the grow issue is real, no need to worry too much beyond normal situational awareness. I spend a great deal of time in the backcountry and on public land have not had any problems.

Mendocino allows more than three guns on a CCW which is a nice perk (and one I wish we had here in Humboldt). As for places to shoot I'm not real familiar with specific locations down that way, despite visiting Fort Bragg several times a year. The guys at NWE (gun shop in Ukiah) may have some ideas.

If you're ever up a little further north and looking for the company of other shooters, drop by Fortuna Pistol Club (Rohner Park in Fortuna, behind the rodeo grandstand) any Monday or Wednesday evening 7:00-9:00 pm, we have 10 stations with 12 and 25 yard targets for handgun and RSO's on duty.

No! Highway 20 begins about 18 miles west of Truckee on interstate 80 and ends in Fort Bragg! It does cross I-5 near colusa!

Haha, no need to go all the way out to the 80/20 split and drive through Rough and Ready, if coming up from Southern California!

Mendocino is a great county for shooting and hunting. It's a huge county with lots of National Forest and BLM land. The Sheriff Tom Allman is very, very CCW friendly. If you have a good record getting a permit for self defense is a piece of cake. For a sportsman there's great hog, bear, dear, turkey and elk hunting. There's also lake, river, and ocean fishing galore near Fort Bragg. If you like the country and don't mind some heavy rain and mild tempertures in the winter, you'll be GTG in Fort Bragg. Mendocino gets a little snow on the hill tops, last winter I was in Wilitts and there was about 2-3 inches of snow on 101. To the south east you have Ukiah which is drier and a lot hoter, in the summer it can reach 115 on occasion. Lake Mendocino and my personal favorite Lake Pillsbury are close by. When you go to Ukiah you gotta eat at Be-Bops, 50's Diner, it's a must stop everytime my wife and I are in Ukiah. Mendocino is not a bad place if you're into wine either. The whole county kind of has the mind your own business attitude, there's tons of weed growers but generally it a pretty nice place, with friendly people. Good luck on your move and welcome to the Rewood Empire.

Yeah you can take 5 all the way to 20 and pass over the north side of Lake County (Clearlake) and then take 101 north, get back on 20 near Wilitts and take 20 all the way to Fort Bragg. Don't go through the Bay Area to get to 101 north your gps might suggest that, too much traffic on 580 (east bay) and 101 through Marin and Sonoma.

That was very helpful, thank you! I do think I should get a CCW at some point for my own protection. I am a Navy Vet and my background is flawless.

I'd bet the ranch, due to your interests, your quality of life and enjoyment will increase substantially!

I live in the Bay Area, but like to visit when I can. Nice place...quite a change from SoCal. Best of luck!

Please update with a field report when you get settled in.
