It was a Bohica upper.

The thread is locked and I exceeded my monthly bandwith on the pictures, but here's the original thread: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=258040

Pictures come back live on 01/17/10.

yes, regardless of whatever previous ugly exchange in this thread had to be edited/deleted, it would be helpful for those of us that missed it to know a bit more about the incident, or at least the make/model of the firearm.

If I remember right its a BOHICA .50DTC upper on an AR lower.

@Jicko - there was a previous thread with rampant speculation about what happened and there were many speculative posts.

Thank you for keeping us updated. There are several CalGuns members, including myself, who own Bohica uppers, and I'm sure I don't just speak for myself when I say that your son's experience was a strong reminder of the respect we should have for these firearms.

Please keep us updated on your son's recovery, as well as the cause of this unfortunate accident.

I'm very sorry to hear of your son's accident. I will pray for a speedy recovery for him.

CG is "usually" better than most when it comes to ridiculous speculation so I'm sorry that went down the way it did.

I'm not sure where you're from, but If I can help, please let me know.

Prayers for your son. So much of the gun culture on the internet is about people misusing their firearms. Without facts people jump to conclusions (I don't know if I did, I was dealing with the death of my father-in-law)

There are two important parts of your story.

a) You son's health and his recuperation, which we all pray for, and
2) The mechanics of the accident. It is a terrible reminder that the "toys" we take so much pride in can kill not only goblins on the other side, but injure ourselves. Any information that can prevent this from happening to anyone else is extremely valuable.

God speed to his recovery.

Best wishes on the recovery.
I've had hand surgery (not firearm-related injury) and I know it takes work and time to heal properly.
Keep up the support for your son, and continually encourage him to stay in the recovery effort.

Cheers

OP: here's hoping your son recovers completely and very, very soon!

I agree with soupersnake on the whole litigation thing. I would add that even if the firearm was proven to be defective somehow, that does not imply that the manufacturer intended it to be defective. It seems to me that a lawsuit would be in order only if it could be shown that the defect existed, was put there on purpose, and the manufacturer knew the likely outcome of putting it there (the Ford Pinto comes to mind). The actions of the manufacturer following the unveiling of the defect would probably make it clear what kind of situation you're actually dealing with -- an honest manufacturer who cares about his customers would make design changes almost immediately, issue a recall, and thereby fix the problem.

Showing all the above is a tall order indeed, and if most people followed that standard the number of lawsuits would drop to a very, very small fraction of what we currently see.

Finally, it's important to realize that shooting is a dangerous sport and, more importantly, a voluntary sport. We choose to place ourselves at the additional risk of injury by participating in it. Accepting the fact that accidents like this can happen and refraining from placing the blame on someone else (even if there is blame to be placed) is, in my opinion, part of what personal responsibility is all about.

Regardless, I think the manufacturer should at the very least be notified of what happened here so that they can examine their design to see if there's anything they could do to reduce the chances of a repeat occurrence.

Intent doesn't have to be proven in product defect cases (though it helps).

Well first of all, I want to wish a speedy recovery to the OP's son. I hope he makes a full recovery. If the OP would like to set up a Paypal account, I would donate a few bucks to help while he is out of work. I'm sure others would too.

Secondly, as someone who has also had an OOB detonation in a .50, I can tell you from experience it's no fun... Mine was with an M2HB on it's maiden voyage. The bolt cocking lever got jammed causing the firing pin to stick in the forward position. When I jerked on the charging handle, thinking it was just hung up, BLAM!! I got a pretty good laceration to my cheek, but was lucky that was it. Now I have a pretty good reminder every time I look in a mirror. I have taken it as a learning experience that no matter how experienced you are with firearms, they demand the ultimate respect or else!

Sorry for bringing this back up, guys, BUT: did anyone notice or mention the fact that the hammer pin in the original pictures is completely unseated?............just a (an) (after)thought.................

Is there ANY news on the shooter?

How's he doing, how's his recovery....?

I know there were a couple of his buddies posting, is he okay physically and mentally? Any news on talks with BOHICA as to what might have been the cause?

Not interested in any drama but would like to hear anything about what's happening about getting the situation cleared up.
