Default US-made barrel for East German AK-47

Well, I got this nice East German AK-47 kit. However, it doesn't come with the original barrel. Would a US-made Romanian pattern barrel work, or were East German barrels quite different?

I'm planning to have someone else work on fitting the barrel, but I have to get the barrel first.

There have been reports that the Romy pattern barrels are a little smaller than the E. German trunnions. There was an easy fix however. Let me see if I can find the info for you. Are you an AKforums member?

Measure your trunnion. If it's oversize, knurling the barrel is a fix. Contact Matt Yeamans a.k.a turbothis for your AK building needs.

No problem. Did you get the sanitized kit or the matching kit?

Well that's great. I just measured my Romy barrels and I got .907", so the US barrels seem to be dead on.

Alright, one Romy barrel, coming up. Or maybe two, if I find a good Egyptian kit

Are the holes on the flat for East German AKs different from the Romanian one? I tried roughly comparing the EG trunnions to the Romanian ones (the problem is, the Romanian ones are in the receiver, so the comparison IS rough), and they seem pretty much the same. Then again, I wouldn't catch small differences like this.

I submitted that question at AK-builder.com, waiting for the reply. Would be nice to use a Tapco flat with pre-bent rails though. Say what you will, but not having to cut (and mess up) the rails does sound like a good idea to me

NO, the Romy barrel will not work with an Egyptian trunnion. Not without alot of trimming.

Apex sells Romy barrels (actual Romanian ones, not the US-made ones) with their Egyptian kits. They also claim the ROmanian pattern US-made barrels would work for their Egyptian kits:

Looks like AK-builder is making a Yugo flat with pre-bent rails. From the looks of it, he's making it for the milled receiver kits, of all things.

P.S.: These commie things are becoming too addictive. Gotta build them all

I don't know what to say about those. My Egyptian trunnion is about .900" and I have an Egyptian Maadi MISR barrel that measures .902".

I thought I took a picture of my Romanian trunnion, but I can't find it. Here's a picture of my Egyptian trunnion. Same pattern as the Romanian and same hole locations. Does your East German trunnion look like this? It should since all of the AKM trunnions I've come accross are the same.

Are you kidding. Those have got to be as hard to find as E. German barrels.
I soooo scored when I got mine for $50.
Here's my $135 Egyptian kit and Maadi MISR barrel.

Yup, looks just like it, sans the color, Arabic letters/numerals, and a bunch of cosmoline. I'll take the picture tomorrow, don't want to wake up my girlfriend now.

I've also got some Romy barrels here waiting for those E. German matching kits to come down a little. Damn! You're right, it is addictive.

$135 Egyptian kit? $50 barrel? How old are you?

Well, hard to find, maybe. I caught myself looking for those Russian kits a couple of hours ago, the ones that came from Israel. Lots of old postings, those went for $190-210 Saw one close at $650 on Gunbroker on 1/4/2010.

Russian kits would be the ultimate, but I would go with a Ruskie milled reweld.

Reweld from when removing a piece of receiver wasn't required? Didn't know those existed.

It's a pity military bringbacks are no longer allowed. There're quite a few Russian AKs in Afghanistan.
