Default Carrizo Creek Range Jacumba, San Diego closed?

Went to the Carrizo Creek range in Jacumba per the directions at http://www.carrizocreekrange.org/. Right at the turn in of the area there were about 3 red signs that said no shooting! As we were turning out the Border Patrol went right by us. I can't believe this spot is actually in view of the border, about 200 yards. Shooting there is probably a hazard to the BP. Sucks cuz we came from North County. Nice scenic ride there at least.

It's about 70 miles from San Diego, and I was there about a month ago to shoot, without hassle. The directions at the website have you turn into an area that Border Patrol sometimes closes because they are working in the backdrop ( I pulled up and started shooting, when less than 2 minutes later they asked me to stop so I wouldn't accidently shoot the guy they had hiding there.) They actually directed me to a spot about an 1/8 of a mile away facing east to go shoot at. If in doubt where you can shoot out there, just find an agent and ask, they are actually quite friendly and helpful.( Even had an extra cleaning rod to help clear a fairly nasty case expansion in an AR once.)

The BP are pretty decent out there. I was told by one agent that they will be closing the whole area some time next year as SDGE is putting in a new substation there.

Turn LEFT at Carrizo Gorge Road
Follow road about a mile
Turn LEFT at OLD HW 80
Follow road about a mile
CCR is between mile marker 37 and 37.5

Popular San Diego shooting range closed due to safety concerns
September 28, 2009 | 12:28 pm

A popular outdoor shooting area in eastern San Diego County has been closed indefinitely because of concerns about local Border Patrol agents safety.

The Bureau of Land Management has shut down the 210-acre Airport Mesa/Carrizo Creek range to the public effective immediately at the request of the U.S. Border Patrol.

The area, popular for recreational shooting and target practice, is located in an expanse that has seen increased border security activities of late. The U.S. Border Patrol officially requested the closure out of concern that the range is putting agents "in the line of fire or in danger of ricochet bullets," according to the request.

"The safety of federal officers in performance of their duties is important to everyone," said Vicki Wood, El Centro field manager for the BLM. "The closure of this popular recreational shooting [area] is unfortunate, but the closure is necessary to protect the agents who are patrolling the borders."

Those violating the closure order risk penalties including fines and prison sentences.

"Displaced users will want to know where they might practice their sport," added Wood. "The nearest BLM areas are in Imperial County and we recognize users will want us to explore closer areas, if available. We welcome their input."

Latest directions:

- East on 8
- Exit Jacumba
- Go south, left on Hwy 80
- Right at mile marker 38
- Follow the dirt roads toward the hills to the southeast. You will have rocky back stop with ~50 yards max range, but you can shoot pistols and shotguns no problem. There are several obvious places where people shoot, it's never empty on weekends.

You cannot shoot against the big hill with the gentle slopes, there is a BP road up there now.

Default range still open... for now...

Went out there this last weekend, (Apr 10, 2010) and shot in the area adjacent to the mountain. we were not harassed at all.

google map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=3...04823&t=h&z=18

The flat area closer to the airport is still closed with signs posted.

google map: http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=3...01929&t=h&z=16

It appears that someone cleaned the area up a bit as there were rake marks and an obvious reduction in the number of spent shell casings. Whomever did this, thanks!

There are new sign posts in place all along the roads leading to the shooting areas. I am a bit concerned that they are preparing to shut this area down as well. We asked several border patrol agents and the gas station attendants, but couldn't get a strait answer.

I know that it's been said a thousand times, but if you do go out please leave the area cleaner than you found it. If you haul trash/appliances out to shoot at, take them back with you. If you shoot shotguns clean up your shell casings! It will take hundreds of years for this stuff to decompose.

The libs are looking for ANY reason to shut down outdoor shooting, lets not give them any.

The east side of the valley is still gtg. I think the west side of the valley has been closed since mid-08 because BP uses it as a look out. But every time I go to the east side BP will stop by to say hi but that's about it. I did notice the new signs but I tried to read them in passing and it looked like it had something to do with new electricy equipment being installed.

Btw there's a guy who lives in a trailer in the valley who will pick up all brass and most of the junk. He's a cool guy always riding around on a quad. That being said I always leave my brass in a neat little pile for him but everything else comes home with me.

Great information.
I was wondering if it was still open.
This place really is a jewel and should be kept clean to stay open.
They should rally up a quarterly clean up program or something.
Any ideas why the website is gone?

There are lots of signs posted that say "No Shooting".
However, there were plenty of shooters still enjoying themselves.
Border patrol also passed by without stopping or saying anything despite the signs.
All areas had shooters today and no one was enforcing the signs. Border patrol officers said "someone posted the signs and it wasnt them"!

Still there was lots of trash which is probably the main reason for the coming closure.

I was there Friday and saw the "No Shooting" "No Trespassing" signs for the first time. I spoke to a Border Patrol agent, he said that he did not know who put up the signs. There was some shooting going on and the agents seemed cool about it. When I got home I called BLM and the informed me that they closed the entire area for the safety of the Border Patrol agents.

too bad we can't get a definite answer from an authority on this. a friend of mine was shooting there last friday and was told by a bp officer that the whole area will be closed in two weeks due to sdg&e buying it out and a recent fire. i haven't checked it out myself but she said some of the hills look like they were burnt.

The Sunrise Powerlink (SDG&E project) is due to start up at any time. The towers will cut right thru that area. All in the name of 'green energy.' Makes me want to puke!

So does anyone know of an alternate area? If you don't want to give away secret areas, just PM them. I shot out at Carrizo a couple years ago. I'm sad to see it closed down. From what I understand, BLM land is fair game? Am I correct on this or mistaken?

A few of us on the San Diego Shooters Yahoo group are planning a trip out there to clean up the area. Any other areas that are open for shooting, please let me know. I'm always game for a cleanup/cookout party.
