Nice shooting with you too, we had fun.

I shouldn't have cleaned my rifle after the last match, I shot 3 foulers last week and two sighters on the 800 yard line this morning and it wasn't enough. After the sighters I had to dial in 2MOA left and two down from last month's zero then over the next five shots it kept walking down and left and I was chasing my zero until it finally settled down near my original zero. It's bad when my 800 yard score is over 20 points lower than my 900 and 1,000 yard scores.

That wind that came up when we were on the 1,000 yard line had me dialing in 3 MOA of windage in my 6.5x284 (about 30") but the 308 guys were dialing in 4.5 MOA. I missed a wind shift badly on my second to the last shot that put the bullet into the 6 ring about 20"+ left.

Good to meet you too and glad you liked it. Next month will be two relays with 20 rounds for score each, at 1,000 yards.

Usually Mike gets there late Saturday morning and lets people come out to get their 1,000 yard zeros.

I am also wondering where the range is as my wife is from Cuyama and I have been there many times.

1000 for My first time @ long range! WOW May as well.Longest range I've fired for score has been 500 w/M16A2.
Must get heavier bullets, those 150 grainers prolly can't hack it.

Nice report Frank. I'm guessing no to cleaning your rifle, huh ? I came off the 1,000 yard line with six minutes right wind on my rear sight, and my last shot was a mid ring ten at 3:00. I'd been doing well with about 4 1/2 minutes until an eight at 9:00 showed me the conditions were picking up, even though the mirage seemed to lag. I revisited the eight ring a few shots later...

For those interested in shooting 1,000 yards in Cuyama, send me a PM here, or email to: myke155 "at" yahoo.com. Our Club matches happen on the third Sunday of the month. Even months are a 20 record shot, unlimited sighters, 2 x 1000 yard course, odd months at the Palma which is record shots each at 800, 900, and 1,000 yards, with unlimited sights at 800, two each at 900 and 1,000.

Your very Welcome Desert_Rat
I have the Bino's with me for that exact reason. It is not uncommon for people to want to watch us shoot, but not realize that a 6" spotter is darn near invislible to the naked eye, even at only 800 yards much less 1000. At 1000 yards its difficult to distinguish your target number board and forget seeing a spotter or scoring disk.
I was shooting .308 Win case with 155 grain SMK bullet seated .022 off the lands, in front of 46.0 grains of Varget powder which gives me a Muzzle Velocity of 2980's from a 31" barrel. With the 155grn you will want a muzzle velocity of 2850 or better to stay supersonic all the way to target. The wind really pushes the 155 grn bullet around so you really have to be on your toes watching for any sign of wind speed or direction change. At 1000 yrds and that load a 4 mph wind change or equivelent direction change will take you from a center X to completely missing the target.
I hope you can make it out and shoot next time. It is much more fun shooting than watching.
Really sorry you had to leave early too,
Ron W.

I am shooting Sierra's 2156 155gr SMK Palma Matchking bullet. Interestingly I started shooting the match with 2155's (shorter 155 SMK) and I had to bring my zero down 1.5 MOA's...Note to self, do not change bullets in the middle of the match...Anyway, I was dialing 3 MOA's of wind so not too bad with the 308...I still am shooting a 20" bbl, so that takes about 150 FPS off my velocity so instead of shooting 2900+, I am just making 2800-2850...Am looking to switch to Varget if I can find it....Right now its RL 15...

Managed to improve my score from 344 on the 1st match to 388 on the 2nd with no misses on the 1k line (last time I had 3)...

Maybe someday I will switch to a longer bbl, but this is what I have now and I am just competing for fun, not to place or win...

A longer barrel is easier to get the speed you need to stay supersonic to target without getting into pressure problems, but the bullet will be in the barrel longer, so your exact duplication of butt placement, cheek weld, grip or lack of, and follow through become critical. It is surprising how far your shot placement will change with the slightest difference in position with a longer barrel. After I shoot this barrel out I will go with a 28 to 30 inch next time. I like the Varget because it is less temperature sensitive than most powders.
Definitely, don't make yourself miserable trying to win matches, but when you do win, it is fun.

Im not miserable and I see other people running 24" bbls and getting the same velocity as me, so I don't know if I will gain much by getting a longer bbl.

I am just out there to have fun...but being consistant is the key and I would like to be able to improve my scores more....
