Default How does one find out if they can or can not buy a gun?

I have a buddy who is interested in purchasing a gun but he is unsure if he can legally own one due to his record. Is there a web site where he can go and run his SSN or something? Obviously he can try to buy one and pass or get rejected, but that would cost $ if he didn't pass.

FYI - No this friend isn't me, as you can see from the for sale thread area I have bought and sold plenty.

Not everyone who has a record is a violent criminal. Many cops even have records, but they are not records that would stop them from being an officer of the law or carrying guns.

Only reason I'm asking is I don't have a record and do not know what kinds of things would disqualify you. Obviously robery would/should keep people from owning a gun, but something as simple as a petty theft from when they turned 18 or drunk in public cause they went outside drunk after someone hit their parked car....Not sure if that should/would stop you.

I just did mine and it took 2 weeks. Not that long of a time...

Note that it's a crime for a prohibited person to attempt to purchase a firearm.

Luckily, rights extend to everyone, with little exception. Even you.

it's pretty simple. Any felony conviction. A felony is a crime for which the punishment is 1 year or more in prison.
or any conviction of domestic violence, even a misdemeanor conviction

most people should know if they fall into either of those categories

Exactly. Felony or misdemeanor? There is your answer. If you want to be 100% sure, get the PFEC.

And assault, etc. Still.....it shouldn't be that hard to figure out whether your charge prevent you from owning firearms or not.

At this point you get dejected until you save up enough money for a lawyer to fight back.

It's my opinion that if his record has anything worse than infractions, they'll tell him he can't get a gun, and it'll be up to him to fight back. Just because he gets denied doesn't mean he can't have a gun, "no" is only the beginning of negotiations. Filling out this form is the starting point.
