Default Muzzle break question.

What is the legality of the Noveske KX3, VLTOR Compensator, Yankhee Hill Machine Phantom, Smith Enterprise Vortex, and the Troy Industries Medeival Muzzle Devices? I heard that they are only legal if they are pinned to your barrel. Which one is the best for the reduction of felt recoil/muzzle rise and or flash suppression?

they only need to be pinned if your barrel is less than 16".

the KX3 doesnt do a good job of flash suppression. the Vortex does. thats my only experience with the ones you listed.

Be certain which of those are Muzzle Brakes and which are Flash Hiders.

Flash Hiders make a Semi-auto centerfire rifle with a detachable magazine an AW. (Mag-lock/BB would be needed)

Muzzle Brakes are legal on all rifles.

They only need to be permanently pinned if you are using a short barrel Less than 16" to (like a 14.5" etc) to meet the 16" requirement, otherwise you have a SBR.

The best device, overall, I've used (and still do) is the PWS FSC556

+1. I have this installed recently and the first thing I noticed was the reduction of muzzle rise, compared with the bird cage that came with my upper. This device works as brake and flash suppresor as well.

OP, none of those muzzle devices that you listed are muzzle brakes. They are all flash hiders. As others have said, muzzle brakes are legal on all rifles and muzzle devices only have to be pinned to meet federal OAL requirements. Flash hiders can be on fixed mag semi-auto rifles or non-semi auto rifles and the like.

PWS DNTC, JP Enterprises Benny Cooley, Miculek Brake, Surefire MB556K.

Take your pick. All are very highly rated muzzle brakes.

I use the smith on my MMG rifle and have been very pleased... it is not as loud as I expected and is very very effective...I was going to use the dpms but it was out of stock at brownells when I was in need of it...the smith was available... I like it so much I am thinking of shortening the barrel on my mini14 and having it threaded and a new front sight installed...

^^^^^Is that brake loud? Is there serious blast with it? I have an Ops-Inc brake and though it is effective at reducing recoil, the concussion is directed right at the shooter. It gets old very quick

I have one of these on an AK and it is a very effective brake without excessive blast.

A letter from the DOJ does not mean it is okay in CA. There have been numerous discussions on the FSC556 here. If you buy it and put it on an otherwise featureless build you are taking a chance and you could run into trouble by the letter of the CA law since it does reduce flash and that is all that matters in CA.

+1 Definitely opening yourself up to more risk of prosecution with the FSC556.

Its loud but the blast does not effect the shooter at all. Just your neighbors your extreme left and right. LOL

If it is advertised as a brake, it is legal.

If advertised as a flash hider/suppressor, it is not.

There is NO construction description in the law, only operation.

...and let's not forget DeGroat Tacticals flash enhancer, for those days when you just want to make sure

Wow, $200 for one of these, even now they're having a 50% off sale, at $100 they're still up there.... gotta say that looks like a cool way to start a forest fire though lol
