Update 2009-09-10: This Folding@home Bounty has been posted! Good luck to all.

We have a had a CalGuns.Net Folding@home team for a little while now. (see this message) To help encourage support for the team we have a "Folding Bounty" posted.

  • 9x18 Makarov - 50 rounds (1 box total available)
  • 9x19 Luger - 50 rounds
  • 9mm Largo aka Bergmann-Bayard - 50 rounds
  • .357 SIG (frangible) - 50 rounds
  • .357 Mag - 50 rounds
  • 38 Special - 50 rounds
  • 38 S&W - 50 rounds (1 box total available) (sponsored by:Nishodan)
  • 380 ACP - 50 rounds
  • 40 S&W - 50 rounds
  • 44 Mag - 50 rounds
  • 45 ACP - 50 rounds
  • 50 AE - 20 rounds
Note: Some of the ammo has only the total amount as shown. (example: .308 ammo) You would have pick another item to go with it.

Additionally, I'll personally donate an Andy Jackson to The Calguns Foundation in the name of the winner.

The Rules:
  • Open to individuals only. No teams.
  • You must obey the Folding@home site rules.
  • You are CALGUNS forum member. You can become a member of CALGUNS and then join in on the fun.
  • You must hold the top daily point produced spot for ten (10) 24 hour periods. (Sound familiar California firearm owners? ).
  • Your Folding@home username should match your Calguns.net member name.
If not, then send me a PM with your details to confirm the match up.
  • The periods end on midnight, Pacific time, in the USA.
  • Please, no play and run. If you collect the prize be a good sport and keep contributing to the team after you win.
  • Should CALGUNS have a problem with a member participating they could invalidate that member's entry.
  • If for some statistically improbable reason we have a tie the member with most points takes it.
  • I am not eligible. (I can't win my own competition.) Nishodan is also sitting this one out. (you might want to thank him for that.)
  • The Rules may change at any time. Please check back for updates. (No plans to change but then I haven't run a Folding Bounty before either.)
The caveats the winner would have to deal with are:
  • The winner has to be otherwise eligible to purchase ammo. I might ask for your ID. Or other supporting docs if as required.
(Example: A Massachusetts resident also needs a FID card.)
  • If you live in Hawaii, Alaska, or Puerto Rico you would pick up the shipping charges.
  • No shipping to APO or FPO addresses. (sorry about this but you probably don't need the ammo anyway.)
  • Any required shipping will be via UPS. If UPS can't ship to you then you are responsible for making other arraignments.

Thanks goes out to to Nishodan for contributing additional ammo types. If someone else also wants to kick into the ammo prize pot or the The Calguns Foundation donation pot I would love to have them on board with this Folding@home Bounty.

folding@home

its been a big thing. its a program you install on your computer, that then allows it to link up to a main database computer at Stanford so they can create a big super computer to do the calculations to help do some genetic or protein stuff...

Hells yeah! This will encourage more people to donate time on their PC to do protein folding simulations.

Folding, or Folding at Home, or F@H is a distributed computing system where a program runs calculations when your computer isn't being used and sends the finished calculations back to Stanford. This way idle computers are contributing to curing diseases and cancer and the research scientists at Stanford don't have to spend millions of dollars on building super computers to crunch numbers.

Well there's your problem! You should go to Stanford instead! Just kidding!

Have a look here: http://folding.stanford.edu/

When wer're ready to run the contest all your computer(s) would have to do is win the PPD totals for 15 days running and you get the ammo!

No Excuse needed as I would probably ask the same thing If I ran across this topic myself.

Absolutely nothing except to:

1) Promote our Folding@Home team a little.

2) Promote CalGuns.net on other boards if this competition starts. I'll probably pass the word out on other boards to draw more in.

3) Perhaps promote 2A rights a little. (as the word gets out on the Folding forums.)

I just didn't want to rub anyone the wrong way on this board first. Most of the other bounty prizes are for cash and/or computer equipment. Haven't see one for ammo and a donation yet.

you wont notice any internet slowdown as the main stressor is CPU power. you will notice a bit more heat, my computer runs at 112F idle, when maxed out it will run at 131F. if your computer throttles the fan speed when your CPU gets hotter, you'll also notice more noise

The other cool property about the default installation of the Folding@Home clients is they run at the lowest priority of any program running on your computer.

What does this mean to you? When you want to use your computer the Folding@Home client is immediately throttled back so that anything in the forground (Such as your web browser, email activity, or file downloading) is given priority over the Folding@Home client.

So as JimmyD mentioned, you really won't notice any slowdown of your system when the Folding@Home client is running.

Here is an example of how the Folding@Home client does not affect my own usage. I have six Folding@Home clients (of various types) running in the background. At the same time I also have my email client (Thunderbird) running as well as several open broswer windows (both Firefox and IE). I also have a few command prompt windows open at any time. All of this is happening on an 3+ year old AMD computer with only 3GB of RAM and Windows 7 (beta) as the OS. Granted, my video card is current (EVGA GTX285). But the rest of my system is definitely NOT the newest thing in the world.

Running a single Folding@Home client is really no sweat for most every system out there, old or new.

If my backup quad was running I'd toss it on there, as it is I've got 4x2.4GHz CPUs running SETI, and have been since...2003 I believe, maybe earlier. Dunno if I can switch this one over . We'll see how my fixings go on the other quad, but once it's up I'd be happy to toss a few cycles your way.

if you have a high end graphics card, work units completed using the GPU F@H client are awarded with more points as they perform larger and more important computations.

Running the GPU client makes my Nvidia GTX260 roar really loud!!

don't forget to add yourself to the calguns team! teamnum=164322

this is my first time folding on a computer, i have been folding for a couple hours now and am only at 9/300. Does that sound about right or is that ridiculously slow? I was thinking my works firewall may have something to do with it. I know it takes +/- 8 hours to make a work unit on my PS3 so i dunno.

When I first read folding at home I thought of folding AK flats........darn BRD! Then I remembered this other thing I did long ago......definitely worthwhile doing but didn't care for the extra system delay....and when the program launched itself in the middle of an MMRPG campaign I was on...it had to go....still free ammo these days is a nice perk....I guess I could leave i running on my work computer when I go home....it is a CAD workstation with a killer GPU

I'll sign up and add myself to the group after work.

I'm running an overclocked Intel i7 920 with 6 GB of ram Will the program run in a 64 bit version of Windows 7?

Update 2009-09-10: This Folding@home Bounty has been posted! Good luck to all.

For the record both Nishodan and me (Vectrexer) are not counting ourselves in order to give others starting out a reasonable chance to win.

Newegg was good to me on the power supply, gave me a refund. I'll be back in a little while, folding to build a better space heater, how is your space heater project going, my current one is a flop, it runs to cold. Very nice folks around here at calguns!!

My EVGA GTX285 mostly maxes out at 80 C. Not quite up to boiling water but it does a good job. And we need it in Daly City and Pacifica where the summertime average highs run 60F.

Just saw that ar15.com also has a folding team. We're pretty close to catching up to them for daily points generation. (115 vs 124 for Calguns)

so wait....this program sends me work to do for stanford? I have to do the protein folding myself? OR does it just use my computer to make a more powerful computer that folds proteins and I get credit for each protein folded when the program is running on my computer?

BTW...how many ppl on here majored in this stuff in college? Biochem and Bio here. Kind of poking around for places to drop a resume.

Human bio here, you don't have to do a single thing except run the program. It uses your computer in combination with others to fold proteins
