Default ND'ed tonight..... Shotgun #4 buck

Well, I am still in shock... I was clearing my shotgun, and.... boom.... right through the bottom of the entertainment system in my back room. I thought I cleared all rounds, and went to dry fire.... Needless to say.. one was still in there...

Damage report... The bottom of the entertainment system is blown out, blew the door off, went through back of entertainment system, and out through wall into other room into laundry basket where all of the shot was caught.

Everyone is okay, but this is a reminder to everyone out there..........

CHECK YOUR CHAMBERS...... DONT ASSUME.. I GOT COMPLACENT.. and a mistake happened..

Damage cost $20 for paint and spakle, $10 for new door to entertainment system, and a HUGE hit to my pride... I fell like selling all of my guns and giving it all up forever.....

Still suprised LEO has not shown up... it's been 30 mins now.

CHECK YOUR CHAMBERS.....

Don't kick yourself in the butt too much, there are plenty on the forum that will do it for you. You made a grave error, brain fade happens. Look on the bright side, you wont do it again. I'm glad your dad wasn't too hard on you, I'm pretty sure he know's you learned a valuable lesson. Thank you for the reminder that this can happen to anyone, good to hear no one was hurt. JT

Watch the cops show up 4 hours from now to investigate a shooting. I'm not surprised that the cops wouldn't show after 1 shot, not necessarily easy for someone to determine where it came from. They might have rolled past in a car looking for something funny already.

And seriously, a cannonball? "i'm sorry" wouldn't cover that if someone negligently fired a cannonball(or anything for that matter) through my home.

I hope not, I have been listening to the scanner recently, and I am not hearing any chatter about shots fired.

I hope I can try to sleep in 4 hours, but I don't think so.

They could have rolled by by now, I suprised the neighbors directly next to me are not all freaked out.

Last time I did a ride-a-long with a PD the LEO told me that usually when they get shots fired calls they seldom find who the offender is/was because it is very, very difficult to pinpoint where it came from unless someone actually saw they discharge occur.

Thanks for owning up to your mistake. I bet there are a ton of people on this forum that have had a ND but wouldn't as much make a peep about it happening. Stories like this may help the rest of us keep on our toes. Thankfully I've never had a ND and I've been around guns 15 years or so but I am only 23 so I have many years of diligence ahead of me.

ETA: take some ibuprofen or something now...the pounding headache will come soon. Last time I shot a shotgun w/o ear protection on my head felt like it was going to explode for about half a day.

I am 20 going on 21, have been around guns for a while now, about 2 years.

The key is diligence... I am not touching any triggers in this house again unless it is to dry fire my Glock for cleaning, that will be done in the utmost safety with multiple checks of the chamber from now on.

I was trying to make a joke about cops being lazy, my tone didn't come through across the internet very well, heh.

And like I mentioned and thefifthspeed said, the cops can't do much unless they know exactly where it came from, and odds are with just 1 shot(not like there was a 2nd to listen for and hear the direction of) there isn't a lot the cops would be able to do about it. If they did get called, they'd probably roll up and down the street a couple of times looking for something out of the ordinary, which they probably wouldn't find unless you ran out front freaking out.

It's 3:30am, stop posting on the internet and go to bed :P

My buddy has accidentally shot a gun 3 times in the last 15yrs. Every time he's had the gun pointed down. He's an ex green beret and knows better but has slowly crept more and more in to dementia. Were doing are best to keep him from his guns which has been easy since he doesn't remember the combo and his safe is a 4hr drive from where he lives. But it's very sad because he wants to shoot and remembers the joy of shooting. My wife and I took him shooting a couple of years ago and that muzzle was flying everywhere, so sadly I must say those days are now over.

You aren't thinking about opening another can of worms by telling them are you?

You had a ND, no one was hurt, you learned your lesson and feel terrible. No need to give the neighbors and their kids stuff to talk and exaggerate about to their relatives, friends and co-workers.

Glad to hear you're ok, it can happen to the best of us (thats why muzzle control is so important)

Loaded guns kill bad guys, unloaded guns kill your friends.

Don't worry about your neighbors getting nosy or the cops getting called. I know for a FACT that almost no one pays attention to just one gunshot.

LOL!

I'll bet the neighbors didn't hear a thing.

I had a ND with a .243Win in my GARAGE and nobody even opened thier doors.

If it wasn't for the 6x12 header I would have had a nice hole in the roof too.

(Defective Martini Henry re-barrel job which was immediately retired to wallhanger status, Thanks Dad.)

Your situation sounds similar to mine. I got my first gun when I was six. I used to think only morons have accidents with guns.

I was 21 and between summer and school at my parents' house. I had just got an M1 Carbine parts kit and was trying it out on my completed M1 Carbine. I had some 30 round mags and had like 25 loaded into each. I was cycling them through and finished. I loaded all the mags back up and noticed one mag was missing a round. I remember seeing that!

What does my dumb butt do? I point the gun through the front window and across the street at the neighbors house and dry fire.

BANG!

It was so surreal. I was expecting a click and hear a bang. I look to where I was pointing and go running out the front door with a whole in its glass. My neighbors are coming out of their house and saying, "What as that?"

I replied, "I just shot a hole into your house!"

Thankfully the 110 grain bullet went through my front door at the window so that was easily fixed, went through my neighbors wall, cracked a window near the wall, went through a dry aquarium right next to the wall, hit a petrified rock, and stopped there. The school bus drives by there within the hour!

The best thing about a ND like yours and mine is no one got hurt and now you will never be the same around guns ever again. You will not dry fire anything until checking at least four times and you will always pay attention to where the gun is pointing.

NDs do happen. When no one gets hurt, they are an excellent learning tool. You will be more careful in the future.

Let's see...
the first time I killed an antique french oak dresser that belonged to a friend of mine... 1911 went off with the safety on - I depressed the grip safety and the rodeo kicked off...had had the trigger "worked on"... good thing it was only a wall and dresser... muzzle discipline is very important...

#2 - working on an action job (was working as a gunsmith) took the model 14 smith accross the shop to the range.. shot a coupla rounds... "emptied it"... had it in the shop and was "testing" the action and the round that didn't get "emptied" punched a brand new shoulder holster hanging on the wall... was deeply dissappointed in the ineffectiveness of 158 gr. 38 spl. swc at non +p velocities and very grateful I had pointed the gun away from my employees...very grateful...alot..

So welocme to the club of people who are grateful for early training in muzzle discipline...glad nobody got hurt...the pride is something that can get in the way anyway.. no loss...

Every time I pick up a firearm, I check the chamber, even if I set it down 5 seconds before......it's the only way to be sure.

I catch myself getting complacent occasionally. I always try to remind myself to be safety conscience. I am pretty sure we all had the moment. No need to keep yourself down. Cheer up and don't let it happen again.

When I was in the Army, my squad leader handed me a stack of rifles to hand in the the arms room just before it was my turn in line. Instead of clearing each rifle I just pointed it up and pulled the trigger. My roommate's rifle still had a blank in it and that armorer hit the deck. The armorer was in the next room in the barraks so I heard about it for a long time.

Fortunately, good muzzle discipline, the gun was pointed out my back door and down, the round hit the dense concrete patio and broke up.

Second one: Slam fire while messing around with a feeding problem on my Walther G22. I was racking it forward with vigor to try and get it to feed reliably and it went off. Had it pointed down, was on the first floor of my house and it was carpeted, so no real problem. I did put a small hole in a plastic rifle case though.

To me the most important thing is muzzle discipline.

I have been around guns for about 15 years and I have had 3 NDs and every time your heart skips a beat. Glad no one was hurt.

+1.

30 years of handling firearms and I've never even been close to a single ND. If you have multiple NDs, you need to evaluate your process for safe handling again.

I had one with a shotgun about 20 yrs ago when I was your age. It was a 12 gauge with slugs in it. I was cycling rounds through the shotgun to clear it and the last round went off when I slapped the action closed. Blew a whole through the plaster ceiling. There was white dust EVERYWHERE. My roomate came home and was like WTF. After a while I crawled up in the attic and retrieved the slug. It had gone through the plaster ceiling, Nicked two rafters, penetrated the tar paper and was stopped by the ashphalt shingle.
I learned a valuable lesson that day and am MUCH more careful now.

43 years here. Every time I hear about an ND reinforces my desire to avoid my first.
