Default Please share your OLL related stories!

It has been nearly 4 years since I broke the OLL movement wide open. At the relentless nagging of many of you, I am finally getting off my duff and writing a book about it! I thought it would be fun to include select short stories from the community at large in the Afterword.

Please share with me your OLL related stories of any kind via the link below!

http://benjamincannon.net/oll/

Submissions will be Anonymous unless you indicate explicitly what we can share.

While the OLL movement is a tiny fraction of CGN/CGF history - that IS a good idea. Something to bring people up to speed on, a sort of 'history of the world so far'.

I wonder if these people who are wondering what an OLL is also wonder why some people on this board yell IANAL after giving legal sounding advice.

So do we share our stories here too? What sort of stories are most pertinent? How we got into OLL builds, Run-ins we've had with LEOs while using our OLLs, the sheer "cool factor" of the whole thing, etc. ?

Everything - how you found out about it, what was attractive about OLL, your experience acquiring one, and how it impacted you and your family.

Anything interesting

My favorite OLL moment is about a couple of weeks ago I show up to the shooting range and almost every rifle on the firing line was an OLL. It was a cinamatic moment were time slowes down and symphony starts to play.

My experience with OLL's began before they were part of everyday life. I went to a Costa Mesa show when admission was $5 and parking was free. A banner caught my eye that said, "you can legally own an AR15 in California". I was mesmerized, like when they opened the suitcase in Pulp Fiction. Turns out there was a dealer who was sealing the magwells so they could be sold as toploaders only. The Prince50 and Bullet buttons were yet to be born.I Left the show with a determination to research this further. So, I come across the Bushmaster Carbon-15, which I had to have as my only option to owning a rifle similar to what I had in the Marines. After my 10 day wait, a conversation began with a West Covina Turners associate, who turned me on to Calguns. I felt I had discovered the world was no longer flat? Needless to say, I sold the Bushy with no forward assist, and the rest is History! 5 OLL AR's and 2 AK's later, all I can say is Thank You, Calguns.net!

A year and a half ago, I went to a range/gun store and was told that the BB/Prince50 OLL rifles are not legal. He said that they wouldn't even order me a lower.

I respectfully disagreed, telling him that I had purchased everything legally, DROSd the lower at a major chain down the street... and asked them if they would stop me from shooting mine there.

He said they wouldn't stop me, but if a cop saw me there could be consequenses.

I went about my shooting. Got the end lane by the gun rack, so my stuff was right by it.

A cop walked in in full tactical gear and a Steyr assault rifle. Walked over to the gun rack, where I had just placed my SOPMOD M4 clone with an ACOG/Dr. Optic combo.

He walked up and said "excuse me...". My heart jumped in to my throat and beat heavily. Here it comes...

"Sir?" I replied (the military never really leaves your head).

"Can you make a little room for my rifle?" My bag was in the way.

"Of course" I said with a forced smile.

He placed his rifle in the rack, and looked at mine. The BB was facing away from him. The heart in my throat was no longer beating...

Then I realized something. He was checking out the ACOG! He gave it a quick nod of approval and said "Nice rifle".

"Thanks" I said, with a genuine smile this time. He went about his business.

I ALMOST offerd to let him shoot it, but that would have been read as further permission to examine the weapon.

I honestly don't think he would have given me a hard time if I had offered... But in the world we live in, you can't be too careful. Heck, a good cop won't take anything for granted either. It's simply unsafe.

Best moment: Seeing them for sale at that same store six months later.

Also saw a dozen or more uppers, lowers and kits at the El Cajon Gun Exchange at reasonable prices!!!! Couldn't believe it.

This is what Calguns and the OLL movement means to us. I can buy a weapon that, with the turn of a screw, is roughly equivalent to what the Army and Marines carry in combat.

Some restrictions obviously don't meet the Heller definition of the second ammendment, and CERTAINLY don't fit the clarification from Nordyke, but I submit this: California families, communities, our constitution and even our country are better protected because of Calguns.

It's a perfect example of how the first amendment supports the second. And vice-versa.

I went to a gunshow for the first time over this past weekend, and was completely impressed by the number of AR-15s I saw at the event. I was especially impressed by the display of the rifles at the CGN booth.

Prior to around 1.5 years ago, I would not have known how to spell "AR-15", or CA legal OLL for that matter. I have learned an immense amount of information since then, thanks to CGN (which BTW, was referred to me by Irvington Arms).

Erik.

rarely enough i was looking at some airsoft ar-15 and m-16 replicas (you'd be surprised how good these toys are... real weight action and metals) as a xmas gift for my nephew

and while chatting it up with the kid behind the counter he told me that he was able to use his "REAL" AR-15 accessory's on these air-soft AR-15 rifles

i had heard that there was a way to own a real AR-15 in CA but always thought it was to much of a hassle to source the parts, assemble it, pay premium $$$, and understand the proper LEGAL setups/requirements

but seeing that this guy was about my age i began to ask him questions on how he went about getting it legally

needless to say 3 days later i had revamped my whole Christmas wish list and spent 1500$ with riflegear.com

i have yet to start assembling my first AR-15 but will as soon as its released from its 10day jail sentence

for now i will spend endless hours clicking my way around calguns.net

ROFLMFAO!

Seriously though, I work in a gun friendly environment with a lot of big time gun nuts. I started talking to one about how I wished I had bought a house 80 miles to the east in Nevada so I could legally own an M4, and he turned me on to the OLLs and to Calguns. After a couple months of research and a little saving, my OLL project is on the way. I am eternally grateful to this site and it's wealth of information.

After being away from the hobby for a few years (did some competitive shooting in the nearly 90's), on returning a couple years ago I was surprised to see an abundance of AR and AK clones at the local shops, forums, and ranges.

I always thought the EBR/AR 'thing' was only for the tacti-cool types and that my older SA rifles (Remington 760 and a couple Mini-14's) were fine for whatever purposes I might want/need a rifle for.

Read up here on CGN and AR-15.com and became intrigued with the "Erector Set for Men" factor, as I'm a tinkerer type. Fondled and fired a few at the range...and began to understand the attraction. More research showed that the AR design was a far superior and much more flexible platform for pretty much any need - I really like the interchangeability and modularity, and easy maintenance and inexpensive parts.

That said, the REAL reason I now have 3 (and building a 4th as we speak) - I really like the fact that they piss off the anti's like no other gun out there (except maybe the AK's and derivatives).

I'm all for promoting AR's for plinking, sporting, hunting, and competitive target shooting - as it helps to diminish the image of the Evil Black Rifle as suitable only for military/LEO and "terrorist" use as a terrible man-killing thing to be feared and restricted. A gun is a gun!

I think I had always wanted an AR-type and an AK-type rifle, I just didn't know it until about a year ago. It started with a trip to Big 5 for the purchase of a home-defense shotgun. Ended up getting a Mossberg 500 tactical persuader. I started looking at the thing after I got it and thought it looked pretty damn sweet in all black with the pistol-grip and the heat-shield. That is when I was bit by the black rifle bug.

I thought, well I was almost sure that that Mossy was probably the coolest toy I could have without being some sort of LEO or something along those lines. Nevertheless, started checking out AR's on youtube and fell in love with them (keep in mind that everybody in my hippy town knows nothing of gun laws and my buddy's still probably think my rifles are illegal). Next, I googled California + AR15 and came up with Lanworldinc.com. I was instantly attracted to the Stag model 1 and had to have it - and it WAS legal somehow -sweet!

After one thing led to another and another I ended up with a few OLL AR's and AK's, espescially love the MMG ones with detatchable pre-ban high cap mags (thanks to my step dad leaving a box with some old m16 mags in the garage that were mine once he moved out, lol). The coolest OLL in my collection now is the Colt LE6940. Even moved to AZ for awhile for a job but it did not work out so back in CA. All I have to say is thank you to anyone and everyone who made the OLL movement possible!

My venture into the world of OLL is well documented in CGN. It started when I bought a Colt M4 22lr from Turners in Nov/09. The salesman told me all the AR accessories would fit this gun. So I started looking for some accessories to put on my 22. About 2-3 days later I went back to Turners and ask the guy some questions about the REAL AR's. By then we had became friends and he added me on his FaceBook page.
It was on FB that he send my a link to CGN and that there was a lower available, mind you at that time a lower to me was like illegal !!! I didn't think I could get it legally, and I thought this guy was just trying to sell something without transfer. I bombarded him with all my concerns and he kinda gave my a miniture version of obtaining an OLL.
Needless to say I bought a LAR Grizzly OLL right after I joined CG ... And the rest is history.
I do thank CG for all the info being posted for ANY new shooter to learn from. I certainly have grown richer in knowledge as a shooter and grew poorer in my wallet as a person because of all the info.
AGAIN, THANK YOU CALGUNS !!!
