Default M-40 a1 questions

Just had some questions I couldn't find answers on the internet trying to build a long action version of an m-40-a1

-What kinda barrel is used, looked online but got different answers.

-What's with the winchester bottom metal and is it easy to convert to a rem 700.

-is there anything else you guys may know of that might be useful in building one of these rifles

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M40_rifle

If this is accurate, the A1 used Hart barrels.

I have no idea about the modified Winchester bottom metal.

You can talk to GA Precision since they sell an M40A1 clone:

The USMC M40s use Schneider barrels. The barrels are speced at 24", but due to the way the Marines measure barrel length, they are actually 25". The Marines measure the barrel from the front of the receiver to the muzzle, they do not count what is threaded into the receiver.

The Army measures their barrels conventionally, full length.

This is why the M40 is a 1000 yard gun whereas the M24 is not. It's that extra inch of barrel.

so I need to buy a 25 inch schnieder barrel, what would I do to convert the bottom metal if I have a long action?

Just think what yet another inch of barrel would do!

I'm hoping the laughter is with me and not at me. It was an attempt at Marine absurdity.

Not sure if you're going for a shooter or a reproduction, but the Unertl would be more authentic for an A1. But the MST-100 is an updated version of the Unertl and is probably a better optic overall.

They are the same price at $2500, so you are looking at spending a bunch of cash either way.

Texas Brigade Armory builds excellent M40A1. I used to have one and on good days, it shot 5 1/2" group with handloads at 1,000 yards. I had absolute confidence with the rifle with a Leupole Mark 4 M3 3.5 - 10 mildot scope. I am thinking about ordering another one soon.

I understand they use a kreiger barrel. I also understand that the wait time for a rifle from TBA can be as much as 16 months.

Mike Lau is very busy and he prioritizes LE, .gov and .mil work over civilian orders, so being in his queue can mean wildly fluctuating turnaround times.

His work is spectacular though.

Why make a copy of the M40A1 when you could do the M40A3?

http://gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewIte...Item=137151019

I'd buy it if I used money for toilet paper...

some of the old m40a1's used hart barrels but the shneider makes the ones for the a3's and the newer a5's. he usually makes a few more to sell to the public they're like 310 + 20 for shipping

How strict does this build have to be anyway? After all, you're doing it with a long action in 300WM, which is completely different from any M40 variant. Why not just pick a decent barrel 300 WM barrel, throw it in a McMillan HTG/A1 stock with the Remington bottom metal, and call it a day?

You will be nowhere close with a long action, the M40a1 has specific specs. Starting with a LA nulifies anything in the M40 series. If you have a long action, you might as well do a M24 build.

YEAH but the m-24 stock sucks plus I like the way the M-40 feels and handles just desire a more capable round. I would do it in 7.62 but I got like 10 rifles chambered in that round. BTW just walked into kerlys and they had not 1 but 4 m-40 A1's

I'll call it the M-40 X
