I'm about ready to purchase handgun. I'm looking at a kimber but I understand that there's a gunshow scheduled for april at the cow palace. You guy think I should wait till the gun show..look for some deals..or you guys think the prices won't be that much of a difference if a decide to buy now.

If you own a safe and you are buying a handgun, you can fill out a 'safe affidavit' form and you don't have to buy a lock for the handgun.

I think his point was if you had a small qualifying safe you wouldn't need to buy a lock, even if your safe had no more room. Then, if you actually wanted to use a lock, you could get a free one.

So, how do I go about getting a "Safe Affidavit"?

Yes, the Browning line all appears to have the UL "Gun Safe" rating. Browning . I don't care about cool - heavy seemed right.

You might see a nice used gun for a fair price, but if you're looking for new no need to wait.

Many thanks.

Now I have 20 of them. I've never been to a gun show in Kali. Do they get pissed when you wheel in your file cabinet of paperwork?

Your free locks won't do you much good when you purchase your next handgun. The 'approved safety device' MUST have been purchased within no earlier than 30 days prior to taking possession of the handgun. To quote from CA Penal Code 12088.1:

e) The sale or transfer of a firearm shall be exempt from subdivision (a) if all of the following apply:
(1) The purchaser or transferee purchases an approved safety device no more than 30 days prior to the day the purchaser or transferee takes possession of the firearm.
(2) The purchaser or transferee presents the approved safety device to the firearms dealer when picking up the firearm.
(3) The purchaser or transferee presents an original receipt to the firearms dealer which shows the date of purchase, the name, and the model number of the safety device.
(4) The firearms dealer verifies that the requirements in (1) to (3), inclusive, have been satisfied.
(5) The firearms dealer maintains a copy of the receipt along with the dealers' record of sales of firearms.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news...

Descriptions of the Browning Safes here say that it is UL tool attack listed.

And I'm betting that your Browning safe has a UL sticker on it somewhere. My AmSec safe does and it isn't half as cool as a Browning.

Don't hold your breath hoping to find some excellent deal at any California gunshow.

Just buy it now. Gun wise, the shows aren't the motherlode of good deals that they used to be.

I'd be more inclined to keep a watch for sales at the local gun stores. Sometimes they'll have some good sales which are comparable to prices around the country.

I've picked up stuff at Reed's annual sale at a decent price, as well as at Traders Sports.

No it doesn't have to be UL approved, it can either be UL approved OR it must meet the requirements specified.

Remember, this is only a paperwork form (although it is an affadavit) they're not coming to inspect your house with calipers, believe me.

You only need to fill one of those out if you have a gun safe. If you don't have a safe, and the gun doesn't already come with a gun lock, then you'll need to purchase a gun lock along with the gun.

you really don't need to download/print the safe affidavits, all the dealers I've dealt with, have provided the form free of charge but then again, I haven't bought a gun at a gunshow in the last 3yrs or so

Hmmm..well I do own a gun safe. It's a Browning pro steel series gun safe I purchased god maybe ten years ago...maybe even longer. It definately gives me peace of mind when I'm out of the house knowing my guns are safely locked away. It should meet DOJ standards for a acceptable gun safes..I would think.
