I didn't get to stay late into the night as I had plans early sunday morning, but Sat evening I was able to work the 15, 40 and 6 meter bands. Made contacts in Mexico, Hawaii, Canada, and as Louisiana. Lots of fun.

Do you have a link for more info? I would like to upgrade to my general and possibly get my wife to test for her tech license.

I am taking my Tech license test on Nov. 14. Although I am taking the practice tests at Ham radio online and I bought the ARRL book with the CD. I am passing the tests all the time but there are some issues and areas I just don't get.

So if there is anyone in the Redlands area that would like to sit down with me and go through and maybe explain it in a way where I can understand it memorize it.

Please PM me.

Ken

New to amateur radio, in fact I'm in the final stages of getting the station set up just now.

Sacramento, General Class
1962 Hallicrafters HT-37 & SX-110
(working on getting a SX-111 and a Heathkit SB-140a into the game)

PM for call sign but please have a reason for asking other than idle curiosity.

Ken,

Just download the full Q&A. Go thru the questions once and Highlight *JUST* the right answers. Then read the question and the right-answer-only. Try *NOT* to read the wrong answers. If you do this the day of or before the test, you'll pass with a 95% or greater.

The Tech test doesn't really teach you how to operate anyways. What the test is trying to make sure you know

> Don't intentionally Interfere
> Don't talk on channels you arn't licensed for
> ID every 10 Minutes
> Be Kind ,Rewind.. err, forget that one.

Anyhow, If you just do the Q&A route you'll be fine for the test.

That's sort of what I am doing now. A lot of tests and reading inbetween.

You are sure right about not showing you how to operate. The meter/band frequency/mode has me baffled. Don't let me get started on sideband or FM either.

Plus it seems that once you get your antenna tuned to a specific meter you have to retune it if you change meters??? Obviously I am very much a newbie.

I am scoring in the 30's correctly all the time and should pass. I even score in the 20's in the general test.

Basically I think I am getting confused with the numbers....too much info and I can't get it straightened out yet.

Yea, that's where real world knowledge will make the test harder! Don't worry if you don't know anything about actually using a HAM radio when you pass the test, that's how it works!

To answer your question. An antenna has to be tuned for each band. Some antennas are "multiband" and can tune for multiple bands at a time. Some Antennas (such has hamsticks) are truly one band at a time. Some "screwdriver" antennas actually change tunes by lengthening or shortening when you change bands. There are also boxes called "auto tuners" for HF that help compensate as well. But don't fill your head with all that nonsense now!

The real use for a Tech test is repeaters for which the usage (offsets, Tones) isn't covered at all. Pass your test and reweard yourself with a nice 2M or Dual-Band Radio (depending on how busy 440 is in your area, ask a local ham store).

K6*
Extra.
The code test seemed for me easier than regulations and theory. But why have licenses if the FCC radio cops are seldom going to listen for violations nor hand out citations? When they do- it is a rare QST bulletin!

I upgraded to extra and have a vanity call now. in less than a year of operating on HF, I have earned WAS and have 75 countries logged with 45 confirmed. I'm using a Hustler 6BTV with a horrible ground radial design and a TS-590 and no amp.

KC6NSF Novice Call Sign, Amateur Advanced Class. got it in the late 1980s just before they did away with the code requirement. I used to do a lot of 10 Meter and 2 Meter. Then about 15 years ago started using packet radio for a while.

There doesn't seem to be a centralized CA list of orgs and crams.

A lot of orgs dont seem to have 2014 schedules up yet or the web pages haven't been updated. I am having trouble even finding the Petaluma one you mentioned. Anyways, a few near me are:

Tracy and Stockton are well covered

Passed my General test in Tracy on 1/27. Got my original Technician Plus license in 1993, ran a 50W packet repeater station for many years. Went dark about 15 years ago as I got into other things, became interested again because of this thread and the Baofeng thread so I decided to upgrade. Probably going to look for a used HF rig.

I was able to find the class and exam by doing a search on arrl.org, but like you said, the organization putting on the class does't have an up-to-date schedule. Here is the link to the class on arrl.org:

http://www.arrl.org/courses/petaluma-ca-94954-41

The class and exam is also available to those wishing to get their Tech licenses. I have managed to get my GF and another CalGunner to come out and get their Tech licenses.

I just ordered a Chinese $20 manual antenna tuner kit from ebay. Does anyone have any experience with this kit? I saw a video on youtube of it and it seemed to work great. Looking for more info on it though.

Here's a link to the kit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/QRP-manual-d...item3a83d6f5bf
