I was just doing some figuring, and came up with what I consider an interesting result. While only 21% of Californians own guns according to the State of South Carolina's Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), it is the most populous state. So, only one state (Texas) has a larger percentage of the country's gun owners, about 9% to California's 8%. Florida is next with about 4.6%.

Well, since this is a relatively rich state, if I were a group like the NRA or a manufacturer, California would be at the top of my list to solicit for sales/donations. Unfortunately since we're a low percentage of Californians, we don't get much of a voice here electorally.

That's what - about 7.5 million gun owners in CA? Not bad, but as a percentage we're down there with MD, IL, NY, MA, RI, NJ and other states with crappy gun laws. From what I see of this list, gun control doesn't reduce crime - it reduces the number of gun owners making them less important at the polls, which of course allows for more gun control leading to ......fewer gun owners.

i'd be interested in knowing how many firearms there are total in each state. i'd be very surprised if CA wasn't leading in that category.

59.7% of the people in Wyoming own firearms but only 21.3% of the people in California. That's why we have all the bad guns laws.

In the political climate since 1968 (if you can remember that far back), if some unknown person called you on the phone and asked the BRSS question Code:
The next question is about firearms, including weapons such as pistols, shotguns, and rifles; but not BB guns, starter pistols, or guns that cannot fire. 12.1. Are any firearms now kept in or around your home? Include those kept in a garage, outdoor storage area, car, truck, or other motor vehicle. (109) 1 Yes 2 No 7 Don’t know/Not sure 9 Refused How they DO answer is known - the General Social Survey gets results around 35% of households. But BATF production and sales data had 235 million as of 1994, and a continuing value of 4-7 million added each year. A decent projection is about 300 million in 2009. There are an estimated 111 million or so households in the US, with an average of about 2.6 persons per household, for about 288 million people in 'households' out of about 304 million known residents. If 35% of 288 million each had 1 gun, that accounts for 101 million guns. I think a number of people who DO have guns answer 'No' when asked.

Seven million people, though, is a lot of people. We should be able to mobilize to have a fair amount of clout.

So explain to me again why firearms retailers still think that "WILL NOT SHIP TO CA" is a good thing to put in their product descriptions?

When you look at the numbers, don't forget that it's the percentage of the total number of people, including minors who can't own firearms. Now, if only those 97 million people voted in large part based on 2nd Amendment issues...

No wonder the shows look the way they do. That's actually a good thing.
Its WE the People here in CA. Together WE stand divided we fall. If this is true that were 2nd, were really showing numbers. Way to stick it to the man. I'm surprised were not first. That's impressive..its like saying F...these freakin' laws that make no sense..but legally.

Form a "target team" club at work. Invite your neighbors to go shooting. Work a deal with your local shooting range for a free firearms instruction day and advertise it in the local newspaper.
Think of it as firearms evangelism. It would happen if gun owners were more outgoing about the sport.
