Default Eotech 511/512 vs 516/517

Hey everyone!

It's time to finally buy a holosight and I'm trying to decide between the Eotech 511/512 series vs the 516/517 series.

Does anyone have both?

Anyone know the advantages and disadvantages to either?

Aside from the obvious movement of the buttons to the left and the 7mm rise..

I've been thinking, if I had a magnifier, it would be a flip magnifier, not that big of a deal to flip it and press the buttons to control brightness.. question is, does having the buttons on the side command an extra $80.

Anyone have the GG&G accucam version? Your thoughts on it?

So, 2 questions that would be important to the decision:

- Do you plan on running with a magnifier frequently? If so, the side controls are much more convenient. As you say, you can always flip it, but if you don't have to, it's one less thing to deal with.

- Do you always want lower 1/3 co-witness? If so, the extra 7mm is good. With the standard height, you can choose which you want by adding a riser, so it has a bit more flexibility. It's not a big difference either way, IMO.

Really, the side vs rear buttons seem to be the big question here, and that depends on your planned use.

The price difference is negligible so if I were you, I wouldn't hesitate moving directly to the 516/517.

- Integral riser for 1/3 cowitness
- Side buttons for magnifier
- Front notch cut so they don't bump into your handguards

And don't forget that the 511 series is being discontinued. The 516 is popular because you only have to carry one battery type (CR123s) to share between your EOTechs and tac light.

Thanks guys...

I've decided to go with the 516...

-Prefer cr123 batteries as they are the same as my flashlights and do better under cold weather
-More robust cage
-Better weather and water proofing
-7mm rise
-buttons on side
-difference in price was the same as getting a 511 with a riser.

I wonder if the GG&G flip covers would fit this model... time to send an email.

AA's are more convenient, but it sucks when they start leaking! I suppose you could go with lithium AA's but I too prefer 123's.

I just received my 516 and 3XFTS Magnifier. I like the side buttons, and how clear the mag is. Also went for the cr123 batteries since most drug stores carry them and they can last a while in a Eotech. Still AA or 123's wil do the trick just as good.

I was considering AA because of their availability... but with something that lasts 500 to 1000 hours... I just didn't see a reason to go with AAs.

Lithiums have a longer shelf life and from my experience as a photographer in cold weather... non lithium AAs SUCK!

That 516 + 3X mag is the hot setup right now. I switched over to the T-1 to give it a go and I already miss my EOTech

I have a 512 and am happy with it. Like others have stated, AA batteries are cheaper and easier to find than CR123 batteries. Sure the sight is longer but not that much longer and from what I understand you get longer batter life off of a AA than you do with a CR123.

Nope, they're the same battery life (CR123s vs. AA) at approximately 1100-1200 hours. You may be confused with the new XPS sights that house only a single CR123 (~600 hours).

I opted for the AAs so I can have the same battery for my Kobras, aimpoint, and other EoTechs.

You mean like this?

Just had to show it off a bit, I love the way the Eotech looks and it has better clearance over the Aimpoint in most cases

I was pondering the same issue...

I opted for the 516.

I should get it in a couple of days...

Yeah, alkaline AAs are risky, as they are more likely to leak over time.

Lithium AAs are readily available these days, and have all the benefits of the CR123 - long shelf life, far better cold weather performance, and less likelihood of leaking. Plus, you can use standard AAs if you need to.

My 552 has lithium AAs, but they didn't make a CR123 model when I got it, and with CR123 lights being common these days, it's less off a risk that you'll not have them when you need them.

I have a 512 on the way. It suits my needs best. I don't plan on running night vision or a magnifier. I only plan on shooting the AR at things 100 meters or less. The scoped M1A is for shooting things beyond that.

There are some killer deals in Lithium CR123 batteries on ebay, I just got a butt load for ~$0.50 each, not bad considering those energizer Li CR123a's can be $3-4 each if you walk into the wrong store....

Switched to the T-1 too and don't miss the Eotech 512 at all--much lower weight, can leave it on in the case/safe for years, and rapid brightness adjustment...

Be careful with the extra-cheap CR123s - most of them are made in China, and there have been many, many cases of them venting, exploding, or catching on fire in devices.

This is more a problem in high-drain devices like tac lights than in low-current devices like an Eotech, but I only buy Made In America batteries, which run $1.30-$1.75, depending. The risk of damaging my gear for a few bucks savings on something that should last months just isn't worth it.

Panasonic USA makes nearly all Made In America CR123s, and is OEM manufacturer for Surefire, Streamlight, Rayovac, Kodak, Duracell Photo Ultra, Energizer E2, and Walgreens ($13 for 2!). You can tell by the green plastic ring under the wrapper at the base of the battery (easy to see if you look close).

Any of these Made In USA batteries will serve you well, as they all come off the same line, though not necessarily to the same spec. Duracell also makes CR123s in the US, but don't have a big OEM program like Panasonic.

You can get the Panasonics here - 50 for $67.50

Quck question; can anyone explain the REALL DIFFERENCE between a clone magnifier and the Eotech 3X mag ? Someone who has shot with or tried both ?

Get the XPS. The way older EOTech mount their batteries is their weakest link.

I run a 516 with a aimpoint 3x, no complaints. I also run a 553 on another AR and I prefer the 516.

Thanks for posting the pic ! So just to be clear, no riser is needed for the 3X mag, just the FTS mount ? What are they going for these days ? Finally, are you pleased with your set up [ and with the Vltor EMOD ] ?

If you're thinking EOTech now, the XPS is the way to go.

Default Eotech 511

For those still can't decide, uscav.com has the Eotech 511 LE model for $369.88 - 15% off = $314.40. Until May 28.

no riser needed, I use the LaRue QD flip mount (LT649), $150. I love my set up, this is what I use for my Tac rifle compitition. The Vltor is one of the best stock I've had.

This allows you to flip the Magnifier out of the way?
Would there still be room for a BUIS?
