Default No Serial # on a Westernfield Shotgun?

My father just gave me a Westernfield (Model m550a) 12ga pump shotgun that an uncle had given him many moons ago. I was looking to register it in my name, and was looking up the model information for more info on it, and noticed that it does not have a serial number it. I looked everywhere but it does not have anything, just the name brand and model number under the receiver. Any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Art

If pre-1968, no serial number was required.

And if you received it from your father, it would be an intrafamily transfer and there is no legal requirement to "register it in your name". Assuming your father is also a CA resident, so that there would be no interstate transfer issues requiring a transfer through a CA FFL.

westernfield's are mossberg 500's (made by mossberg for sears IIRC)

if it is pre 68, there will be no serial number (and only one action bar)

Remove the recoil pad and put some kind of identifying mark (not your DL# or SS#) and take a picture of it. That way you can always positively ID it.
