Exclamation IMPORTANT: Please attend Nordyke Oral Arguments

All,

It is quite important for the actual Nordyke appeal that we pack the courtroom and the overflow. Our counsel would like to be able point out the large number of "The People" sitting in the courtroom that day who believe that this is an individual right that applies to California. Background on this case and why it is important here.

We will be hosting an event after. If you can also attend that, please post that in this thread. Details and tickets are available.

To remind, the argument is Thursday January 15, 2009. The argument will start at 1:30 PM in Courtroom 1, 3rd floor of the James R. Browning US Courthouse.

The address of the Court is:
United States Court of Appeals - 9th Circuit
95 Seventh Street
San Francisco, California 94103

This is at the corner of Mission and 7th and is one block from Civic Center BART. There are a couple of parking decks closer to the Convention Center that are easy walks.

You must have government issued photo ID to get in the building. Note that no weapons, or knives of any kind are allowed inside the Courthouse building. Photography is also not permitted. I'm making sure the court can seat a few hundred "The People" for this case. Please wear business attire - we want to look impressive. I'll be in a suit and tie.

A large showing of well dressed firearms owners will help prove the point that the Second Amendment matters.

Edited to add: Please cross post this to other forums, blogs, etc. A very large turnout is very important.

More information and updates here: http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...d.php?t=143064

I feel like some hippie waiting for the ok to drop LSD on the front lawn of the white house.

Does the court have a place to 'check' cell phones? If I can't even carry a tiny SAK, I'd really like to be able to call 911 - but my only phone, as many are, is a camera phone.

911 isn't the issue, of course - I just want to be able to text to my wife that I've started for home!

I did a reconnoiter this past week. You can bring your mobile phone or laptop in. During the actual hearing and in the actual courtroom they will ask you to turn it off. If we overflow into the cafeteria for closed circuit TV, you can use the web to live blog. The Marshalls told me that they'd overflow into another courtroom first but I'll get more details on that as we get closer.

Count me in. Dressed "Mall Ninja" style ......Don't sweat it, I 'll be there respectable and boring so as not to scare Jane and Joe public. Besides, Halloween will still be a long way off.

But maybe a few blue or orange plastic replica guns for effect??? They ARE training aides after all!

A reminder for anyone going into a court building -- wallet chains, perfume (if your wife or GF comes), and eating utensils are not allowed either. Basically, nothing steel/metallic besides your cellphone is allowed in with you. This is coming from someone who did jury duty all last week.

sometimes they prohibit cell phones with cameras. It depends on the mood of the security.

WOW - I just read the court documents at
http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/opinions...ve/S091549.PDF
Many tax dollars were spent on the Amicus briefs from nearly all the local counties and several cities. No wonder there are budget shortfalls.
I bid you all a peaceful day in court. I get to go to work.

That's many moons ago in this case. The current info and filings are available on the CGF wiki.

I don't often say this, but I want to reiterate - your attendance is important. Ask yourself whether you value your vacation day more than your gun rights.

Arguments start at 1:30PM and the court generally closes to the public at 3:30PM so that's the worst case.

Does the court have gun lockers available to State LEOs and LTC holders?

When I went I didn't see anything for LTC/CCW folks. Don't hesitate to call and see what the US Marshalls say about LEO firearms storage. (415) 355-8000

I'll try to get a half day off on 01/15... got 75% chance to be there. I'm legal resident ("green" card & CA ID, no driver's license) - is that ok?
And don't talk to the media, right?

Google says the Ferry Building is 1.6 miles from 95 Seventh Street - about a 30 minute walk down Mission.

Is there a bus that goes down Mission? It would probably take me 20 minutes to walk it, as I used to have to walk that distance to work.

You can take the Number 14 Mission bus, but it would be faster to go down into the Embarcadero Muni station and take any of the outbound trains to Civic Center station.

~8 min walk to Embarcadero Muni. 4 minute ride to Civic Center.

About the same total on a 14.

See "plan a trip" here.

BTW, I embedded the Google link because it also has the public transit info on that same linked page.

I'm coming from Livermore/Pleasanton and will be there. I'll probably drive in too.

Not sure about my plans after (where's the dinner? when? will my wife let me go? will she come to the dinner?) but would be happy to plan carpool or caravan once I know more.

EDITED: Aha, saw the other thread. I will be at the dinner, will be driving in, my wife's not interested, and I would be happy to carpool or caravan. Fair warning, though: I'm planning on getting there early enough to be in the courtroom itself, rather than the overflow....

I'd always wondered what that fancy building was across the street from where I work.. If I can make it that day, I will be there (since I'll be there for work anyway).

How many people do we need here to fill the courtroom and overfill? Are we talking in the 30-50 people range or the 400-500 people range?

I'd walk 4 blocks to the Embarcadero BART station and take BART 4 stations to the Civic Center station.

I didn't get into the courtroom we're scheduled into but my experience is that they seat about 80. If we could get to 200 we'd back the courtroom, the overflow courtroom, and flow into the cafeteria.

Just call in "gun." It seemed like a good idea to the Prop. 8 opponents.

anyone else mildly amused that the courthouse is named "Browning?" I know it's not the right Browning, but amusing none the less.
