Default Recommend a Rifle Bag/Case for transport of my 16" barrel AR?

Hello it's the noob again

One of the last things on my list to grab is a nice rifle case or bag. What is the recommended length for my AR that has a 6 pos stock and a 16" barrel? Is 36 or 38 enough? I don't have a big car at all and I'd like to be able to fit it in my trunk because riding with it in the cabin doesn't seem too smart.

I also want it to last a long time and protect the rifle if I happen to bang it into the doorway or something.

What are you guys using? Where did you get it? and how much?

I have been looking at the one on clearance at adxtactical for 42 bucks because it has detachable pouches that I could keep tools, ammo, mags, etc. in but I want to make sure I buy the right one the first time.

Space for a pistol isn't absolutely necessary, but it would be nice and waterproof would be nice too. LMK what you guys got. Throw up a picture if you have one

I use Pelican cases for my business. Hard cases, waterproof, industry-tested. Once I get a full order lined up, I'm going to order a 1700 w/ foam for an AR carry case. Price is between $150-200.

For reference this is the one I'm looking at on Adx. Hope they don't mind me using their pics.

Brand: Condor Outdoor Gear
Description :Material: 600 Denier NylonFirst Compartment: 36 long with two velcro strap to secure armor.Second Compartment: 27" long with two internal pocket for pistols, optics or other accessories.Other Features:Two modular Mag pouchesOne modular Utility Pouch3/4" PaddingUnit Weights: 6lbsSize : 36" x 12" x 3"

If I have optix on my AR later is 12" tall going to be tall enough? I'm sure it will fit, but do I need room for it to be cushioned? Since its not a hard case I assume it will move around a little in there.

Hmmm....Pelican huh...is that a locking hard case like a Starlight?

Default gun case

I really like this one from cheaperthandirt.com - http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/MOLLE207-1.html

I'm guessing it's the same one that you posted a picture of. I can fit all kinds of stuff in the pouches - and the one really nice feature that doesn't get any mention on the description is another huge zip-up pocket behind those three removable pouches. I can fit my 16" AR in the main compartment and my GSG-5 in the outher pocket. It's perfect! Highly recommend it.

Here are some pics of it.

Grab a tape measure

Addax' case is the generic Chinese rifle case...$50-ish is the going rate. Mr. Suzuki had a bunch FS here a couple of years ago; they do a good job.

They are not Starlight/Pelican, but if you want a soft case they last a long time. I can fit a Para FAL with the folding stock open in the main compartment, and a Camp 9 with the stock folded in the accessory compartments. MOLLE pouches on the outside can hold a ton of stuff.

Blackhawk makes a similar case for more $$, but it doesn't have the outside pouches.

I highly recommend the Addax case, but the regular price is too much

I bought this http://www.botachtactical.com/masigunca.htm

Maxpedition 1105 Sliver II Gun Case , two rifle case.

Yes, I ordered from botach, but I guess I was a lucky one since they shipped on time to me. On sale too at 49.99. There's coupons online to reduce the cost further. Two pockets, great if you have multiple uppers/short rifles and such. Plus it's square, doesn't scream I've got rifle esp. since I live in an apartment complex.

This one is by far my favorite carbine rifle case amongst an i-Shot (which I like but is now unobtainium), another Leapers case, and a Bulldog. It is dirt cheap, low profile (doesn't look like a evil rifle case), and has just enough padding to protect your rifle to a from anywhere while transporting your stick in the car.

http://www.cheaperthandirt.com/CASE020-1.html

If you are planning to transport your rifle by air, then a Pelican or Storm case is the way to go (hard case for protection). The hard case is too heavy and overkill for quick range trips though and they cost quite a bit more.

Yes, hard case, waterproof, extremely durable.

The 1700 is 35.75 in long. Enough room for a rifle, mags, optics, and a pistol.
I have been using Pelican cases for photo and computer equipment for years.

Bad habits are hard to break

Oddball - You could get a full order lined up in a heartbeat if you wanted to sponsor a group buy on here. Do you get good enough pricing to make it special with good quantities? I would jump on that for at least one, probably two myself.

Fairfaxjim, nah, my company is not that big to get a discount on Pelican cases . My "full order" is a couple of lenses, various accessories, a camera body, and 3 cases, including a rifle case. Rather than order piece meal and pay multiple shipping charges, I'd just prefer making it one order.

I picked up a MOLLE case at the OC gunshow recently. It has a lot of padding, straps on the inside to secure your rifle, another large pocket for a few pistols or whatever. It also has a bunch of magazine pouches. It does however look like you're carrying a EBR in it.

I do recommend it, especially for the price. Here, I found it on CTD.

Which is the same case on addax.com OP referred to. They're all over the place. Prevailing price is $50, CTD's "regular" price is out of line.

CTD's attitude as to shipping to CA is also out of line. The same rifle case is available all over the web.

+1 Stay away from CTD whenever possible. Condor makes a nice bag similar to the one being discussed for around $50. Many of us could sell you one, if you want soft case for less money than Galati or 5.11.

Big fan of Pelican cases.

pretty heavy and bulky, but I am not into swapping my gun around in different cases for different trips (fly versus just gun range for example). I want 1 good all around case that was also protective and lockable. A pelican is great for travel as well as everyday in my opinion.. plus you can custom cut the foam to fit all your accessories and it keeps them all protected and away from any elements.

Hmmm, This sight always makes me want to buy stuff. Now I need a nice soft case....

Oh and I have a storm M3200. I like the latches better on the storm. Both Hard cases are top flight.

The one I mentioned in my post (post #5) comes with a shoulder strap. I still stand by it, it's a great bag that has worked perfectly for me.

I've owned Tac Force bags they aren't something I would buy again. Junk zippers and poor quality sticthing. They might be better now, I junked mine a few years ago.

I was given a couple of Condor bags and so far so good.

If I were going to buy a bag it would be Maxpedition, 5.11 or Blackhawk I believe they are all made in America.

Pelican/hard cases are a PITA. The op wanted a case for his AR not a camera. These are battle rifles even with optics if it won't survive in a soft case it's the wrong rifle.

If you're going to fly alot with your guns and need a hard case then the Pelican or SKB or some other case is pretty much required. To avoid the hassle with them after arriving at your destination. Gut the foam out of them and put your guns in soft cases inside the hard case. When you get to your hotel dump the hard case and haul your guns in soft cases.

If you need a hard case to take your gun from the trunk of your car or back of pickup to the bench to shoot............

Hey MR - sorry to drag this thread back from the dead, but wondering what case you ended up with? How big did you end up needing?

I just purchased a Daniel Defense DDXV and am in 10 day hell. I'd like to order my case now, but like you, don't want 52" overkill. Found this 36" on Midway USA for $21!

http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct...tNumber=863014
Plano Protector Pro-Max Takedown Shotgun Gun Case 36" Polymer Black - $21.49 Sale!

Do you think this would do the job, or is it going to be too small for a carbine w/16" barrel? Seems like most "tactical" gun cases are 33", but this one look like a real steal and carbine compatible?

Just to edit my own post above, I read a single review on the vendor page stating that one guy couldn't get his M4 to fit in this case. Anyone else have experience with the Plano?

Anybody have any experience with UTG? I found this cheap "tactical" case on Amazon for $33.50 w/free shipping:

http://www.amazon.com/UTG-Covert-Hom...8007784&sr=8-2

UTG Covert Homeland Security Gun Case (32-Inch)

There was one complaint in the Amazon reviews that a 32" case isn't long enough as some carbines are 33"?? There are so many well rated, cheap cases out there that I find it hard to justify spending $100+ on something "nicer".
