Default Something must be done

The spam yesterday and today is ridiculous. Something must be done.

I suggest the first 5 postings by a new user are not visible until a mod releases them. If they are spam the message and user account can be deleted.

Is it bots or is it people?

I say strengthen account creation with email validation, captcha images, etc.

I spent most of my weekend creating spam. I'm disappointed you guys don't appreciate the time and effort I put into making you report me.

JK I do agree about green lighting new posts by new users. I don't want to make new users to get scared away with new security questions.

More regulations will solve any problem.

It's not necessarily more regulations. It's more like building a wall and vetting them before letting them in.

It's worth it once you go through the process to gain entrance.

Get Jerry Brown, Gavin Newsome and Kevin Leon involved.
They will solve the problem. ...

I agree. That is why I would rather be less accepting before hand. As I stated before, account validation first, then you can post to your liking.

And for those of you saying something about regulations and making jokes about restrictions, don't forget that this forum also has rules... and these are rules made by the people

I was under the impression the rules were made by the guy that owned the site. I didn't realize this was a democracy.

That guy must be genius... day 1 - make site, day 2- make all the rules, day 3 - rule...
I bet he is also the only person enforcing the rules.
Because, you know, he could foresee all sorts of situations. No site members ever affected rule making like this thread is trying to do... I am sure this is the first time.

But you are right, someone owns this sight and can make up rules as they see fit. So far I haven't found one I disagreed with, but oh well.

The more hurdles you make, the better the spammers get. Then you need more security. I personally would rather just ignore the spammers than make the site so secure it's unusable.

Look at Australia's gun bans. It took the actual bad guys about 5 minutes to figure out that an incredibly reliable open bolt machine gun is easier and cheaper to manufacture than any standard gun. Now they have a problem.

Sometimes you need to determine 1st if what you think is a problem actually is a problem or just something you don't like.

Question I Am by No Means...

...either a computer nor internet expert.

That said, I've been on Calguns.net since it started, as well as arf, the FAL Files, ihatemud.com (the arfcom of Land Cruisers) since 2009, and more than a few other forums.

This is the ONLY place that has, imo, a spam issue that's getting to be more of a PITA as time passes.

Is this something that calguns' web provider needs to fix, or maybe find a new provider?

Ditto.

I *NEVER* see it on my Toyota forums.

Moderate new posts
Prevent new users from creating a new thread for 10 days (will trim the bots)
In addition to the "report" button, add a "Spam" button that
1 - automatically reports the post, auto-fills "spam",
2 - posts "reported" to the thread so others know they don't need to report it
3 - puts a "block" on the user until cleared by a mod... if abused by a troll against a legitimate user, the troll get an immediate perma-ban.

How about we let anyone delete a post if the poster has a post history of fewer than 5 posts? The spam wouldn't last more than a few minutes.

An individual msg may last 5 minutes, but there are still tons of spam inbound 24 / 7.

I'll observe again that this particular board has 98% of the spam.

no cause it may cause a conflict where a new poster who has a legitimate complaint about a vendor or even a member would get deleted.

just have the mod verification for new users.

first 10 posts have to be moderated before being posted. done deal.

spammers/botters would then have zero recourse to get around that short of hijacking people's accounts or taking the time to actually participate in this forum for 10 posts then spam.

Most sites do a minimum number of posts read until you are allowed to post anything.

The spam on this site has reached an all time high. Probably 20 or so active spam threads right now.

I really do not understand why nothing is being done to deter these spammers.

I'd say ban all IP ranges outside of the US, I'm sure these spammers aren't US based.

I havent been on Calguns for super long, but ive been a member of several ofher car, sports and hobby forums for almost 2 decades and I can say without a doubt Calguns has the worst spamming problem I have ever seen. Its a shame because I find the contributions from the members here invaliable.

What is the actual point of the spam? I just don't get what they are trying to achieve.....it seems pretty retarded and a waste of time is there an objective? Does anyone actually click on them lol
