Wow, congratulations! Military life isn't an easy one sometimes wither its guard, reserve or AD. I know allot of retirees and i asked one the other day if it was all worth it, he looked at me and said " after 24 years, i was brain dead." are you going to keep going retire?

Congratulations on your 20 years in service Chris. Active, Reserve or Guard, it's no longer a cake walk.

Thank you for 20 years of professionalism, dedication and trail blazing so others may have the privilege of serving their Country and the ones who choose not to serve may sleep under the blanket of freedom you help provide.

Thanks for the 20 years serving.
What job requires you be Reserve?

My Dad did 38 1/2 USAR.
He always had a poster in our den of a reservist holding a baby that said something like "it'll pay for his college"
I kinda liked that poster.
And, that's how my dad did help my sister and I in college.

it is called the Miltech program it requires us to be in the Reserves to maintain our civilian job with the Army. yep that is that hardest part of my job is the Reserves.

On Oct 2nd it will be 20 years since I got out of the Navy and I am finally de-classified.

(No more informing the Dept of State every time I leave the country, no more asking permission to go to China, etc. WooHoo!)

If you guys want to know anything about nuke subs after that I'll be glad to tell all.

Frank,

I'm a day early. Anyway, I'd like to know,

1. Were you on an attack or missile sub?
2. If you were on a attack-sub, how successful were you sniffing out the Russian subs (and not having them know it). Reverse question if you're on a missile sub?
3. What psychological-profile difference that separates a submariner from a surface guy.
4. When the book "Hunt for Red October" came out, what did you think, real enough?
5. Do the Chinese-Intel try to hit on you?

Congrad. on your 20yrs.

Man you will have some serious longevity pay! That's 14 hash marks! You are going to run out of room on your sleeve.

I did 27 total, 21 active. That was long enough for me. Luckily, I fell under the old retirement system and could bail with half of base pay at 20 active. Were I you, especially since you already have significant active duty time, I think I'd go for an AGR job or something that will allow you to punch out sooner. If you don't retire til age 60 you'll have to live to be at least 80 to make enough retirement money to make it worth your while.

I don't know about the USAR, but in the Guard once you have 20 good retirement years they do a periodic review of your records to ensure you are still deployable and not just taking up space. I don't know how a soldier could stay in 40+ years and still be fit to fight unless he was a desk jockey. 20 years in the Infantry will almost always get you a 20% or better disability rating just due to wear and tear.

I really don't have that much active time. i have been the Reserves my entire career. active never really was very atrative to me. too much BS on a daily basis. but i have 20 yrs service now. since i'm in civil service i can stay in until i'm 60 then i get the boot from my civilian job and the Reserves. i also have my TSP (401k) type retirement from civilian side and military. yeah it won't be much but it is a retirement i get. i do like my job i have though.

The important thing is you like your job. I understand why you wouldn't want to go active duty on a long-term basis. There are many negatives and you can find yourself in a dead-end job with too many years in to give it up.

Most reservists punch out with 20-30 years of service and become "gray-area" retirees until they turn 60, when they can start collecting their money. In my experience, they won't let you hang around much after 20 unless you're an E7 or above. Some E8 and E9's are allowed to stick around up to 30 but I've not seen any go farther than that.

Of course, I don't know what your contract says, and I've been out for 5 years now. Many things have changed, I'm sure.

being a Miltech that I'am. I'am exempt from many rules that includes promotions and such. i have to maintain membership in the Army Reserves to keep my job. my unit cannot make me get promoted or get kicked out. it is a benefit so to say. since i see E-7 as a major headache for me and the pay is not much more than E-6. i will go for my E-7 when i feel like and my command knows that. besides where i'am at the E-7's get beat up pretty bad with all the BS around here. i get enough as a SSG.

but yes i do like my job very little stress and good people to work with we are all Reservists and most have all been to the sandbox. so it's a good place to work and it's close to home too boot.
