CrazyCobraManTim where were you stationed after Millington. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton with HMLA 267, HMLA 367 Det A and HMLA 369.

I was at MATSG-90 for the first 6 months (ATC radar repair), then on detail duty at Navy Lake in between classes (riding horses, feeding catfish & buffalo) and then over to -901 to complete AEA1 (avionics course). When I graduated, I went to MCAS Pendleton as well, with HMT-303, but I had quite a few friends who were in the line squadrons you were in (Mullen, Fairman, Ganger, Grainger - all sparkies like me). I EAS'd in "88.

I also separated from active duty in 88 ordinance on Cobras and Huey's. I don't remember the big boys at Pendleton around that time. Just Cobras Huey's and 5th OV-10 Broncos.

My father (Navy - WWII) always said that the Chief's Mess had the best chow.

ANy Ranger Battalion DFAC.

I loved Wednesdays the boys would BBQ steak and we would have shrimp, Crab legs usually locally caught, and even lobster once in a while.

The Cooks in battalion are f'ing awesome. Even out at the FOB you would come back from patrol and they would have you dialed up with a steak and an Odoul's they had saved jus for people returning on Patrols.

Those guys rocked, kept moral as high as it could be.

Ramstein AF Base, Germany. My Army Scout Platoon was at the base for some unknown reason for a few days in the late 80's. I vividly remember being astonished that they had real steaks (the non-re-hydrated kind) and fresh fruit in their mess hall, and all the food looked pretty and edible. After eating there the first evening, sadness engulfed me because I knew this would not last because I was going back to my squadron in Mannheim in a few days.

Going to quote myself because this thread should have ended right after I posted. There was not better place to eat. No better cooks to have.

They would win awards in cook offs all the time. For DFAC for cooking for civilian cooking contests.

Fort Jericho Vermont. A little national guard post with a bunch of good ol' ladies cooking home made food. I was there for the Army's mountain warfare school. I swear I ate better there than I did back home. School wasn't always easy but at least the chow was good and you always had that to look forward to.
