Default Sportsmensguide Won't ship 10 Rd mags to CA claiming ATF restriction

Hi,

I tried to order 10Rd AR mags from Sportsmen's Guide online, and the website won't let me place the order.

So my husband and I called their customer service number 800-882-2962 and talked to a lady named Serena, she claimed that ATF has imposed restriction to certain counties of CA, and not allowing any magazines to be shipped to these counties.

The ridiculous part of this is, we just had a gun show here this past weekend, and 10rd magazines are fully legal for purchase.

Does anyone know this to be true that ATF can impose shipping or ordering restriction to certain counties of a state, or if Sportsmen'sGuide is full of it?

Welcome to Calguns. Sportsman's guide is not a great place for Californians to purchase from, you would find that right away if you search for it here. ATF does not impose specific restrictions by county, however your county/city may have restrictions against certain items shipped there, like ammo.

What those guys said.
ATF doesn't have anything to do with it, although I really can't blame sellers who can't keep up with this Bananny State.
(That's a combo Banana Republic and Nanny State.)

That's being kind. The people at Sportsman's Guide are terminally stupid. Over the years they have refused to ship all sorts of things based on imaginary laws, codes or just key words. At one point they wouldn't ship a flatware set to Ventura County because the set included butter knives, which they thought were restricted. Want a buffalo hide? Nope, California has restrictions on the importation of live bison. How about a nice generator? Sorry, CARB restricts some makes/models that don't have an EO number, even thought the generator at SG was an approved model.

I ran this pretty high up their corporate ladder when they wouldn't ship something that my wife wanted only to find out that they rely pretty heavily on key words in laws, codes and ordinances, and make no attempt to actually interpret the actual intent.

Welcome to cal guns

California Allows counties and cities to have additional rules and restrictions...

CA also sues a lot of people.... a lot of out of state businesses for conducting legal business....

So many vendors choose not to deal with CA, or certain cities/ counties.... and some just dont deal with gun parts, mags, etc

My guess is that a Sportsman guide phone rep makes up things to sound like the company does not want to risk selling items to CA

Support a local shop... help keep them open whenever possible

Sportsman Guide would not ship an air rifle to me over the summer. Ended up buying a different one that was better, nicer, and less expensive from another retailer that actually supports sportsmen.

I would not give them any business regardless of where you reside.
They suck.

Pretty much this. They won't ship anything that is for an evil rifle to Ca, that includes tools and scope mounts. I've bought ammo from them years ago, but I won't even look at their site any more, due to their BS rules that they make up on their own. They should at least be honest and not try to blame some other entity for their BS. You know like our owner talks a good game about support for the 2nd Amendment but his lawyer is chicken sh$% and told him not to ship to Ca.

Well, sportsman's guide is correct on interpretation of firearms law almost as often as the California DOJ.

I do not blame them at all. It is the citizens of California who elected these jokers into power that pass ridiculous gun laws. Why bother and risk a lawsuit or something. I do not blame them. I blame the gun control politicians and cops that willingly enforce these laws yet use the exact same firearms that are illegal to the common folk. That is total BS and reeks of corruption and fascism. I do admire sheriffs that out and out say will not enforce gun control laws they view as unconstitutional.

Welcome to Calguns.

Sportsman's Guide sucks and they hate CA.

Here's what you do....

Buy a 10 round mag from some other vendor, then make a photocopy of the invoice and send it to Sportsman's guide with a big middle finger in the middle of it. Make sure you put "Here's how much money you could have gotten from a CA resident".

I do this to Sportsman's Guide and Cheaper Than Dirt whenever I can. Screw those 2 vendors.

Go on the commercial sales section of this forum and look up Mag Commander. Great prices and fast shipping. He sends a hand written note thanking you for your business. I have bought over 40 mags from him. Oh yeah!, welcome to Calguns.

I'd blame those who don't know even a little bit of SG's history. You might try doing your homework.

Not only do they make up policy as to legalities as they go along.

They're notorious for selling ammo and scarce parts cheap claiming they have inventory while they've actually got nothing in stock. Once they get orders in the pipeline, those orders get canceled, they raise the price, and start taking new orders.

Calgunners who care about a vendor's ethics very simply do not shop at SG, Dick's, CTD, etc.

CTD was great when they first opened. Their store was between Dallas and Fort Worth and close to at least half a dozen gun stores with tons of stuff. CTD had great deals on good surplus stuff. I never checked gun prices there. Prices went way up and selection way down once they saw the profit in Chinese AR parts.

Honestly, SG needs to just say they will not ship ANYTHING to CA. Get it over with and stop the games with imaginary banned items. The real answer is to not buy from them though.

Had a very bad experience - ordered some stuff from them just prior to a major price increase. Conveniently, they "ran out of stock." Sent me a bunch of b.s. emails about how I continually needed to email them that I still wanted the item, or else I'd lose backorder (and pricing) status. They did this on an irregular basis, so I would lose track. I got sick of them, and finally bagged it. This was several years ago - I will never deal with them again.

Sportsmans Guide and Cheaper Than Dirt are both about as anti gun as they come. By outright LYING about what can and can't be legally shipped (as oppossed to just admitting that they have the right to make any policy they want to) to different places, they make a lot of smaller vendors think that their big corprate lawyers have actually research all the laws. So, the little guys will blindly follow in their footsteps and do exactly what the antis want which is keeping firearms, firearms parts and ammunition out of certain states/counties/cities. Please, do not support companies that are only out to hurt all of the legal firearms owners in the country.

When it comes to Sportmans Guide, I used to get their catalog. The items they had in there looked mostly like Chinese made junk with some blankets and camping gear mixed in. I never bought from them because it looked cheap.

CTD, not as bad, and have ordered some things from them when I did not live in CA.

But they sell junk. After market parts and products for the most part.

You all can bad mouth them till the cows come home. California is not a major market for them.

They make their own policies about not shipping "restricted items" to many locations other than CA. Some of those are based on laws but many are based on nothing at all.

For my part. . . I do not blame sportsman companies that will not sell firearm parts to California. I was visiting family in Nebraska a few years ago and went to a big gun shop and they had some great bargains. I asked if they deal across state lines. They said yes, of course. I said I am in California, then he said, "oh except there. You guys have Feinstein. Sorry." I laughed. I kind of suspected they wouldn't.

I blame California politicians. Not the companies. Does anyone think for one second that if California had normal gun laws, they would not sell here still?! Of course they would. But why risk any litigious civil or potentially even criminal actions. Not worth it. Also, keep in mind California has enacted retroactive legislation in the past. WTF is that about?!

I blame those who refuse to support us "behind enemy lines". Their actions only allow the antis to gain more ground.

SG won't ship ammo to my zip code stating it is a restricted zip code. I buy most of my ammo on line so I know it's not restricted.
Because they don't have the facts, I won't buy anything from them. No matter how great the deal is.
